Dedicatory Epistle to King Amanullah Khan of Afghanistan
رباعی شمارهٔ 2دل من روشن از سوز درون است
My heart is bright with burning inwardly, mine eye weeps blood, yet all the world does see;
رباعی شمارهٔ 3به باغان باد فروردین دهد عشق
Love gives the garden the soft breeze of May, Love lights the star-buds in the meadow gay.
رباعی شمارهٔ 4عقابان را بهای کم نهد عشق
Love reckoneth the price of eagles cheap, and giveth pheasants to the falcons’ grip.
رباعی شمارهٔ 5به برگ لاله رنگ آمیزی عشق
’Tis Love that paints the tulip petals’ hue: ’Tis Love that stirs the spirit’s bitter rue.
رباعی شمارهٔ 6نه هر کس از محبت مایه دار است
Not every soul of Love hath capital, not every spirit respondeth to Love’s call.
رباعی شمارهٔ 7درین گلشن پریشان مثل بویم
A spent scent in the garden I suspire, I know not what I seek, what I require.
رباعی شمارهٔ 11نوای عشق را ساز است آدم
To the voice of love Adam is music; he reveals secrets, but he is a secret himself.
رباعی شمارهٔ 12نه من انجام و نی آغاز جویم
I do not seek the beginning or the end; I am full of mystery and seek the realm of mysteries.
رباعی شمارهٔ 13دلا نارائی پروانه تا کی
O ask not what I am, or whence came I: ’Tis self-involvement I am living by:
رباعی شمارهٔ 17گذشتی تیز گام ای اختر صبح
Swift-paced thou hast departed, star of dawn! Perchance disgusted that we slumbered on:
رباعی شمارهٔ 18تهی از های و هو میخانه بودی
The tavern were exempt of turbulence, no spark illumed our clay’s indifference.
رباعی شمارهٔ 20چه لذت یارب اندر هست و بود است
What joy it is, O God, to be, just be! Each atom’s heart feels this joy gratefully.
رباعی شمارهٔ 23به کویش رهسپاری ای دل ای دل
O heart, my heart, unto His street thou’rt gone! O heart, my heart, thou leavest me alone;
رباعی شمارهٔ 24رهی در سینهٔ انجم گشائی
A stranger to your own identity, you seek new paths to the stars in the sky.
رباعی شمارهٔ 25سحر در شاخسار بوستانی
One morning in a garden, passing by, I heard a bird perched on a high branch cry:
رباعی شمارهٔ 26ترا یک نکتهٔ سر بسته گویم
To make you understand life’s mystery, I tell you one thing in all secrecy:
رباعی شمارهٔ 27بهل افسانهٔ آن پا چراغی
Do not tell me about that silly moth who met an easy, suicidal death.
رباعی شمارهٔ 28ترا از خویشتن بیگانه سازد
I do not sell the stuff that generates forgetfulness and that inebriates.
رباعی شمارهٔ 29زیان بینی ز سیر بوستانم
Do not come to my garden if you have an uninquiring mind, which does not crave.
رباعی شمارهٔ 30برون از ورطهٔ بود و عدم شو
From being and non-being’s whirlpool free yourself; in this world of contingency.
رباعی شمارهٔ 31ز مرغان چمن نا آشنایم
The garden songsters’ chorus I, for one, do not join, but sing on my branch alone.
رباعی شمارهٔ 32جهان یارب چه خوش هنگامه دارد
A wonderful show, God, is Your world; all things seem to have drunk from the same wine-bowl.
رباعی شمارهٔ 33سکندر با خضر خوش نکته ئی گفت
Sikandar said to Khizar aptly: ‘Dive into the stormy sea of life and strive against the waves.
رباعی شمارهٔ 34سریر کیقباد ، اکلیل جم خاک
The throne of Kaikobad and Jamshid’s crown, Church, temple, Kaaba – all dust to be thrown on the dust-heap.
رباعی شمارهٔ 35اگر در مشت خاک تو نهادند
If there were set within thy hand of dust a heart, a hundred fragments of warm blood;
رباعی شمارهٔ 36دمادم نقش های تازه ریزد
Life keeps expressing itself in new ways: Content with one fixed form it never stays.
رباعی شمارهٔ 37چو ذوق نغمه ام در جلوت آرد
When the desire to sing aloud grips me, I storm the world with bursts of poesy.
رباعی شمارهٔ 38چه میپرسی میان سینه دل چیست
You ask me what is this heart in your breast; it is your intellect that has been blest with feeling.
رباعی شمارهٔ 39خرد گفت او بچشم اندر نگنجد
The intellect says He cannot be seen, but still the eager eye stays caught between hope and fear.
رباعی شمارهٔ 40کنشت و مسجد و بتخانه و دیر
You only built church, temple, idol-house and mosque – all symbols of your slavery.
رباعی شمارهٔ 41نه پیوستم درین بستان سرا دل
I never got attached to this world, this fair-seeming garden, and its vanities.
رباعی شمارهٔ 42به خود باز آورد رند کهن را
I offer you a strange, new kind of wine, which makes old tipplers sober, sane and wise.
رباعی شمارهٔ 43سفالم را می او جام جم کرد
His wine turned my cup into Jamshid’s cup: A sea poured into me, a tiny drop.
رباعی شمارهٔ 44خرد زنجیری امروز و دوش است
To past and present reason is a slave; it worships images of eye and ear.
رباعی شمارهٔ 45خرد اندر سر هر کس نهادند
There is an intellect in every man. My body is, like others’, clay and blood’ just mud.
رباعی شمارهٔ 46گدای جلوه رفتی بر سر طور
You went to Mount Sinai, soliciting a sight of God, being a stranger to yourself.
رباعی شمارهٔ 47بگو جبریل را از من پیامی
Go and tell this to Gabriel from me: Though not all light like him, I yet aspire to God.
رباعی شمارهٔ 48همای علم تا افتد بدامت
If you seek knowledge, then be of two minds; increase your doubt, decrease your certainty.
رباعی شمارهٔ 49خرد بر چهرهٔ تو پرده ها بافت
Mind wove the veils that cover up Thy face, and ah! Mine eyes thirst upon Thee to gaze.
رباعی شمارهٔ 50دلت می لرزد از اندیشهٔ مرگ
Your heart quakes with the fear of death: you pale at the mere thought of it.
رباعی شمارهٔ 51ز پیوند تن و جانم چه پرسی
Why ask, what links my body and my soul? I fall not in the snare of How, How Long:
رباعی شمارهٔ 52مرا فرمود پیر نکته دانی
A wise man said to me: ‘All your todays are earnests of a great tomorrow.
رباعی شمارهٔ 53ز رازی معنی قرآن چه پرسی؟
Why ask of Razi what the Quran means? By each man’s own heart is it best construed.
رباعی شمارهٔ 54من از بود و نبود خود خموشم
I do not say if I exist or not. To say I do were self-idolatry.
رباعی شمارهٔ 55ز من با شاعر رنگین بیان گوی
Tell thou for me that poet of bright words: Thou tulip flame, what profit does it bring?
رباعی شمارهٔ 56ز خوب و زشت تو ناآشنایم
I do not know thy Ugly and thy Fair: Thou takest Gain and Loss to measure by.
رباعی شمارهٔ 57تو ای شیخ حرم شاید ندانی
Perchance, grave minister, thou knowest not Love too shall have its Judgment after death:
رباعی شمارهٔ 60میارا بزم بر ساحل که آنجا
Don’t arrange a party on the shore, for there the song of life is gentle and soft.
رباعی شمارهٔ 61سراپا معنی سر بسته ام من
I am a hidden meaning which defies the glance of spinners of mere words away.
