صبح آمد و صحیفه مصقول برکشید

صبح آمد و صحیفه مصقول برکشید
وز آسمان سپیدهٔ کافور بردمید

Dawn has arrived and drawn his polished blade, and from heaven camphor-white morn has broken forth.

صوفی‌ِ چرخ خرقه و شال کبود خویش
تا جایگاه ناف به عمدا فرودرید

The Sufiof the skies has rent his blue robe and shawl deliberately even to the navel.

رومی روز بعد هزیمت چو دست یافت
از تخت‌ِ مُلک زنگی‌ِ شب را فروکشید

After being routed, the Rumi of day having found the strength has dragged the Zangi of night from the royal throne.

زان‌سو که تُرک شادی و هندوی غم رسید
آمد شدی‌ست دایم و راهی‌ست ناپدید

From that direction whence the Turk of joy and the Hindu of grief arrived there is everlasting going and coming, and the way is not to be seen.

یا رب سپاه شاه حبش تا کجا گریخت
ناگه سپاه قیصر روم از کجا رسید

O Lord, whither has the army of the Abyssinian king fled? Whence so suddenly has the army of the Caesar of Rum arrived?

زین راه نابدید معما کی بو برد
آنکه از شراب عشق ازل خورد یا چشید

Who can catch the scent of this invisible road wrapped in enigma? He who has drunk or tasted of the wine of love preeternal.

حیران شده‌ست شب که کی رویش سیاه کرد
حیران شده‌ست روز که خوبش که آفرید

Night is bewildered at who has blackened its face; day is bewildered at who has created it so fair.

حیران شده زمین که چو نیمیش شد گیاه
نیمی دگر چرنده شد و زان همی‌چرید

Earth is bewildered at how one half of it became grass, and the other half grazing, and grazed upon that continually;

نیمیش شد خورنده و نیمیش خوردنی
نیمی حریص پاکی و نیمی دگر پلید

Half of it became eater and half for eating, half eager for purity and the other half impure.

شب مرد و زنده گشت‌ حیات است بعد مرگ
ای غم بکش مرا که حسینم‌، توی یزید

Night has died and come to life again; it is life after death. O sorrow, slay me, for I am H. usain and you are Yaz¯ıd.

گوهر مزاد کرد که ‌«این را کی می‌خرد‌؟‌»
کس را بها نبود همو خود ز خود خرید

The pearl held auction, saying, “Who will buy this?” None had the price, so the pearl bought itself from itself.

امروز ساقیا همه مهمان تو شدیم
هر شام قدر شد ز تو هر روز روز عید

Saki, today we have all become your guests; every night through you has become a Night of Power, every day a day of festival.

درده ز جام باده که یسقون من رحیق
که‌اندیشه را نبرد جز عشرت جدید

Give from your bowl the wine of they shall be given to drink of pure wine, for only new joy will cut away anxiety.

رندان تشنه‌دل چو به اسراف می‌خورند
خود را چو گم کنند‌، بیابند آن کلید

The heart-thirsty reprobates, when they drink wine to excess, when they lose themselves, then they find that key.

پهلوی خُم وحدت بگرفته‌ای مقام
با نوح و لوط و کرخی و شبلی و بایزید

You have taken up your station beside the vat of Unity along with Noah and Lot and Karkh¯ı and Shibl¯ı and B¯a Yaz¯ıd.

خاموش کن که جان ز فرح بال‌می‌زند
تا آن شراب در سر و رگ‌های جان دوید

Be silent; for the spirit in joy is flapping its wings, so that that draught has coursed into the head and veins of the spirit.
