دی عهد و توبه کردی امروز درشکستی
دی بحر تلخ بودی امروز گوهرستی
Yesterday you made compact and repentance, today you have broken them; yesterday you were a bitter sea, today you are a pearl.
دی بایزید بودی و اندر مزید بودی
و امروز در خرابی دردی فروش و مستی
Yesterday you were B¯a Yaz¯ıd and were augmenting; today you are in ruins, a dregs-seller and drunk.
دردی بنوش ای جان بسکل ز هوش ای جان
ازرق مپوش ای جان تا که صنم پرستی
Drink the dregs, O soul! Break from reason, O soul! Do not wear blue, O soul, until you worship idols.
امروز بس خرابی هم جام آفتابی
نی کدخدای ماهی نی شوهر مهستی
Today you are very dissolute, you share the cup with the sun; You are not the master of the moon, nor the husband of the lady.
افزونی از مساکن بیرونی از معادن
آن نیستی ولیکن هستی چنانک هستی
You are greater than dwellings, you are outside mines; you are not that, but you are just as you are.
یک گوشه بسته بودی زان گوشه خسته بودی
آن بسته را گشودی رستی تمام رستی
One corner you were bound up, of that corner you were sick; you opened that which was bound and escaped wholly, escaped.
حیوان سوار نبود جز بهر کار نبود
حیوان نهای تو حیی جستی ز کار جستی
A beast is not a rider, it is only for the sake of labor; you are no beast, you are a living man and you have leaped from labor, leaped.
تو پیک آسمانی چون ماه کی توانی
تا تو سوار پایی تا تو به دست شستی
You are a heavenly messenger; how can you be like the moon until you ride aloft and are in the hand of the thumbstall?
خامش مده نشانی گرچه ز هر بیانی
شد مرهم جهانی هر خستهای که خستی
Silence, give no sign, though you expressed everything; every wounded one you have wounded has become the salve of a world.
