فریب کشمکش عقل دیدنی دارد
که میر قافله و ذوق رهزنی دارد
The intellect’s deceitfulness is worthy of remark: It is the leader of the caravan, yet fond of highway robbery.
نشان راه ز عقل هزار حیله مپرس
بیا که عشق کمالی ز یک فنی دارد
Do not seek guidance from that jack-of-all-trades, intellect. Apply to Love, for it is perfect in the only art it practices.
فرنگ گرچه سخن با ستاره میگوید
حذر که شیوهٔ او رنگ جوزنی دارد
Although the West converses with the stars, beware, there is in all it does a taint of sorcery.
ز مرگ و زیست چه پرسی درین رباط کهن
که زیست کاهش جان مرگ جانکنی دارد
What can I say concerning life and death? For in this ancient inn life is slow death, and death life’s final agony.
سر مزار شهیدان یکی عنان در کش
که بی زبانی ما حرف گفتنی دارد
Pull up your horse sometimes at the graves of us martyrs; our silence has something to say.
دگر بدشت عرب خیمه زن که بزم عجم
می گذشته و جام شکستنی دارد
Pitch your tent in the desert of Arabia again, for Persia is convivial company, which has stale wine and breakable wine-cups.
نه شیخ شهر نه شاعر نه خرقه پوش اقبال
فقیر راه نشین است و دل غنی دارد
No city shaykh, no poet, and no holy man, Iqbal is but a roadside beggar, but he has a proud, contented heart.
