گرم خون انسان ز داغ آرزو
1

گرم خون انسان ز داغ آرزو

آتش ، این خاک از چراغ آرزو

Tis the brand of desire makes the blood of man run warm, By the lamp of desire this dust is enkindled.

2

از تمنا می بجام آمد حیات

گرم خیز و تیزگام آمد حیات

By desire Life's cup is brimmed with wine, So that Life leaps to its feet and marches briskly on.

3

زندگی مضمون تسخیر است و بس

آرزو افسون تسخیر است و بس

Life is occupied with conquest alone, And the one charm for conquest is desire.

4

زندگی صید افکن و دام آرزو

حسن را از عشق پیغام آرزو

Life is the hunter and desire the snare, Desire is Love's message to Beauty.

5

از چه رو خیزد تمنا دمبدم

این نوای زندگی را زیر و بم

Wherefore doth desire swell continuously The bass and treble of Life's song?

6

هر چه باشد خوب و زیبا و جمیل

در بیابان طلب ما را دلیل

Whatsoever is good and fair and beautiful Is our guide in the wilderness of seeking.

نقش او محکم نشیند در دلت

آرزو ها آفریند در دلت

Its image becomes impressed on thine heart, It creates desires in thine heart.

8

حسن خلاق بهار آرزوست

جلوه اش پروردگار آرزوست

Beauty is the creator of desire's spring-tide, Desire is nourished by the display of Beauty.

9

سینه ی شاعر تجلی زار حسن

خیزد از سینای او انوار حسن

Tis in the poet's breast that Beauty unveils, ’Tis from his Sinai that Beauty's beams arise.

10

از نگاهش خوب گردد خوب تر

فطرت از افسون او محبوب تر

By his look the fair is made fairer, Through his enchantments Nature is more beloved.

11

از دمش بلبل نوا آموخت است

غازه اش رخسار گل افروخت است

From his lips the nightingale hath learned her song, And his rouge hath brightened the cheek of the rose.

12

سوز او اندر دل پروانه ها

عشق را رنگین ازو افسانه ها

Tis his passion burns in the heart of the moth, ’Tis he that lends glowing hues to love-tales.

13

بحر و بر پوشیده در آب و گلش

صد جهان تازه مضمر در دلش

Sea and land are hidden within his water and clay A hundred new worlds are concealed in his heart.

14

در دماغش نادمیده لاله ها

ناشنیده نغمه ها هم ناله ها

Ere tulips blossomed in his brain There was heard no note of joy or grief.

15

فکر او با ماه و انجم همنشین

زشت را نا آشنا خوب آفرین

His thoughts dwell with the moon and the stars, He creates beauty in that which is ugly and strange.

خضر و در ظلمات او آب حیات

زنده تر از آب چشمش کائنات

He is a Khizr, and amidst his darkness is the Fountain of Life All things that exist are made more living by his tears.

17

ما گران سیریم و خام و ساده ایم

در ره منزل ز پا افتاده ایم

Heavily we go, like raw novices, Stumbling on the way to the goal.

18

عندلیب او نوا پرداخت است

حیله ئی از بهر ما انداخت است

His nightingale hath played a tune And laid a plot to beguile us.

19

تا کشد ما را بفردوس حیات

حلقه ی کامل شود قوس حیات

That he may lead us into Life's Paradise, And that Life's bow may become a full circle.

20

کاروانها از درایش گام زن

در پی آواز نایش گام زن

Caravans march at the sound of his bell And follow the voice of his pipe.

21

چون نسیمش در ریاض ما وزد

نرمک اندر لاله و گل می خزد

But when his zephyr blows in our gardens, We stay loitering amongst tulips and roses.

22

از فریب او خود افزا زندگی

خود حساب و نا شکیبا زندگی

His witchery makes Life develop itself And become self-questioning and impatient.

23

اهل عالم را صلا بر خوان کند

آتش خود را چو باد ارزان کند

He invites the whole world to his table; He lavishes his fire as though it were cheap as air.

وای قومی کز اجل گیرد برات
24

وای قومی کز اجل گیرد برات

شاعرش وا بوسد از ذوق حیات

Woe to a people that resigns itself to death, And whose poet turns away from the joy of living!

25

خوش نماید زشت را آئینه اش

در جگر صد نشتر از نوشینه اش

His mirror shows beauty as ugliness, His honey leaves a hundred stings in the heart.

26

بوسه ی او تازگی از گل برد

ذوق پرواز از دل بلبل برد

His kiss robs the rose of freshness, He takes away from the nightingale's heart the joy of flying.

27

سست اعصاب تو از افیون او

زندگانی قیمت مضمون او

Thy sinews are relaxed by his opium, Thou payest for his song with thy life.

28

می رباید ذوق رعنائی ز سرو

جره شاهین از دم سردش تذرو

He bereaves the cypress of delight in its beauty, His cold breath makes a pheasant of the male falcon.

29

ماهی و از سینه تا سر آدم است

چون بنات آشیان اندر یم است

He is a fish, and from the breast upward a man Like the Sirens in the ocean.

30

از نوا بر ناخدا افسون زند

کشتیش در قعر دریا افکند

With his song he enchants the pilot And casts the ship to the bottom of the sea.

31

نغمه هایش از دلت دزدد ثبات

مرگ را از سحر او دانی حیات

His melodies steal firmness from thine heart, His magic persuades thee that death is life.

32

دایه ی هستی ز جان تو برد

لعل عنابی ز کان تو برد

He takes from thy soul the desire of existence, He extracts from thy mine the blushing ruby.

33

چون زیان پیرایه بندد سود را

می کند مذموم هر محمود را

He dresses gain in the garb of loss, He makes everything praiseworthy blameful.

34

در یم اندیشه اندازد ترا

از عمل بیگانه می سازد ترا

He plunges thee in a sea of thought, He makes thee a stranger to action.

35

خسته و ما از کلامش خسته تر

انجمن از دور جامش خسته تر

He is sick, and by his words our sickness is increased: The more his cup goes round, the more sick are they that quaff it.

36

جوی برقی نیست در نیسان او

یک سراب رنگ و بو بستان او

There are no lightning-rains in his April, His garden is a mirage of colour and perfume.

37

حسن او را با صداقت کار نیست

در یمش جز گوهر تف دار نیست

His beauty hath no dealings with Truth, There are none but flawed pearls in his sea.

38

خواب را خوشتر ز بیداری شمرد

آتش ما از نفسهایش فسرد

Slumber he deemed sweeter than waking Our fire was quenched by his breath.

39

قلب مسموم از سرود بلبلش

خفته ماری زیر انبار گلش

By the chant of his nightingale the heart was poisoned Under his heap of roses lurked a snake.

40

از خم و مینا و جامش الحذر

از می آئینه فامش الحذر

Beware of his decanter and cup! Beware of his sparkling wine.

ای ز پا افتاده ی صهبای او
41

ای ز پا افتاده ی صهبای او

صبح تو از مشرق مینای او

O thou whom his wine hath laid low And who look’st to his glass for thy rising dawn.

42

ای دلت از نغمه هایش سرد جوش

زهر قاتل خورده ئی از راه گوش

O thou whose heart hath been chilled by his melodies, Thou hast drunk deadly poison through the ear.

43

ای دلیل انحطاط انداز تو

از نوا افتاد تار ساز تو

Thy way of life is a proof of thy degeneracy, The strings of thine instrument are out of tune.

44

آن چنان زار از تن آسانی شدی

در جهان ننگ مسلمانی شدی

Tis pampered ease hath made thee so wretched, A disgrace to Islam throughout the world.

45

از رگ گل می توان بستن ترا

از نسیمی می توان خستن ترا

One can bind thee with the vein of a rose, One can wound thee with a zephyr.

46

عشق رسوا گشته از فریاد تو

زشت رو تمثالش از بهزاد تو

Love hath been put to shame by thy wailing His fair picture hath been fouled by thy brush.

47

زرد از آزار تو رخسار او

سردی تو برده سوز از نار او

Thy ill-usage hath paled his cheek, Thy coldness hath taken the glow from his fire.

48

خسته جان از خسته جانیهای تو

ناتوان از ناتوانیهای تو

He is heartsick from thy heart-sicknesses, And enfeebled by thy feeblenesses.

49

گریه ی طفلانه در پیمانه اش

کلفت آهی متاع خانه اش

His cup is full of childish tears, His house is furnished with distressful sighs.

50

سر خوش از دریوزه ی میخانه ها

جلوه دزد روزن کاشانه ها

He is a drunkard begging at tavern-doors, Stealing glimpses of beauty from lattices.

51

نا خوشی ، افسرده ئی ، آزرده ئی

از لگد کوب نگهبان مرده ئی

Unhappy, melancholy, injured, Kicked well-nigh to death by the warder.

52

از غمان مانند نی کاهیده ئی

وز فلک صد شکوه بر لب چیده ئی

Wasted like a reed by sorrows, On his lips a store of complaints against Heaven.

53

لابه و کین جوهر آئینه اش

ناتوانی همدم دیرینه اش

Flattery and spite are the mettle of his mirror, Helplessness his comrade of old.

54

پست بخت و زیر دست و دون نهاد

ناسزا و ناامید و نامراد

A miserable base-born underling Without worth or hope or object,

55

شیونش از جان تو سرمایه برد

لطف خواب از دیده ی همسایه برد

Whose lamentations have sucked the marrow from thy soul And driven off gentle sleep from thy neighbours’ eyes.

56

وای بر عشقی که نار او فسرد

در حرم زائید و در بتخانه مرد

Alas for a love whose fire is extinct, A love that was born in the Holy Place and died in the house of idols.

ای میان کیسه ات نقد سخن
57

ای میان کیسه ات نقد سخن

بر عیار زندگی او را بزن

Oh, if thou hast the coin of poesy in thy purse, Rub it on the touchstone of Life.

58

فکر روشن بین عمل را رهبر است

چون درخش برق پیش از تندر است

Clear-seeing thought shows the way to action, As the lightning-flash precedes the thunder.

59

فکر صالح در ادب می بایدت

رجعتی سوی عرب می بایدت

It behoves thee to meditate well concerning literature, It behoves thee to go back to the Arabs.

60

دل به سلمای عرب باید سپرد

تا دمد صبح حجاز از شام کرد

Thou must needs give thine heart to the Salmá of Araby, That the morn of the Hijáz may blossom from the night of Kurdistan.

61

از چمن زار عجم گل چیده ئی

نو بهار هند و ایران دیده ئی

Thou hast gathered roses from the garden of Persia And seen the springtide of India and Iran.

62

اندکی از گرمی صحرا بخور

باده ی دیرینه از خرما بخور

Now taste a little of the heat of the desert, Drink the old wine of the date.

63

سر یکی اندر بر گرمش بده

تن دمی با صرصر گرمش بده

Lay thine head for once on its hot breast, Yield thy body awhile to its scorching wind.

64

مدتی غلطیده ئی اندر حریر

خو به کرپاس درشتی هم بگیر

For a long time thou hast turned about on a bed of silk: Now accustom thyself to rough cotton.

65

قرنها بر لاله پا کوبیده ئی

عارض از شبنم چو گل شوئیده ئی

For generations thou hast danced on tulips And bathed thy cheek in dew, like the rose.

66

خویش ر بر ریگ سوزان هم بزن

غوطه اندر چشمه ی زمزم بزن

Now throw thyself on the burning sand And plunge into the fountain of Zemzem.

67

مثل بلبل ذوق شیون تا کجا

در چمن زاران نشیمن تا کجا

How long wilt thou fain lament like the nightingale? How long make thine abode in gardens?

68

ای هما از یمن دامت ارجمند

آشیانی ساز بر کوه بلند

O thou whose auspicious snare would do honour to the Phoenix, Build a nest on the high mountains.

69

آشیانی برق و تندر در بری

از کنام جره بازان برتری

A nest embosomed in lightning and thunder, Loftier than eagle's eyrie.

70

تا شوی در خورد پیکار حیات

جسم و جانت سوزد از نار حیات

That thou mayst be fit for Life's battle, That thy body and soul may burn in Life's fire!
