ز جان خاور آن سوز کهن رفت

دمش واماند و جان او ز تن رفت

The old ardour has disappeared from the life of the East; its breath wavered and soul left its body;

2

چو تصویری که بی تار نفس زیست

نمی داند که ذوق زندگی چیست

Like a picture without the chain of breath and does not know what the taste of life is.

3

دلش از مدعا بیگانه گردید

نی او از نوا بیگانه گردید

Its heart lost desire and craving, its flute ceased to produce notes.

4

به طرز دیگر از مقصود گفتم

جواب نامهٔ محمود گفتم

I am expressing my ideas in a different form, and writing in reply to the book of Mahmud.

ز عهد شیخ تا این روزگاری

نزد مردی بجان ما شراری

Since the time of the Shaikh, no man has given the sparks of fire to our life.

6

کفن در بر بخاکی آرمیدیم

ولی یک فتنهٔ محشر ندیدیم

We lay on the earth with shrouds around our bodies, and did not experience a single resurrection.

7

گذشت از پیش آن دانای تبریز

قیامتها که رست از کشت چنگیز

That wise man of Tabriz witnessed before his eyes calamities that resulted from the invasion of Genghis.

نگاهم انقلابی دیگری دید

طلوع آفتابی دیگری دید

I saw a revolution of another type: Appearance of a new sun.

گشودم از رخ معنی نقابی

بدست ذره دادم آفتابی

I removed veil from the face of meaning, and gave sun in the hands of a mote.

نپنداری که من بی باده مستم

مثال شاعران افسانه بستم

Don’t you think I am intoxicated without wine, and spin tales likes poets.

نبینی خیر از آن مرد فرو دست

که بر من تهمت شعر و سخن بست

You will see no good from a low person, who accuses me of being a poet.

بکوی دلبران کاری ندارم

دل زاری غم یاری ندارم

I have nothing to do with the street of the beloved, and do not have a grief-stricken heart nor a longing for the beloved;

13

نه خاک من غبار رهگذاری

نه در خاکم دل بی اختیاری

Neither is my earth the dust of a street, nor is within my clay a heart without self-control.

14

به جبریل امین همداستانم

رقیب و قاصد و دربان ندانم

My mission in life is in line with Gabriel the Truthful; I have neither a rival, nor a messenger, nor a porter.

15

مرا با فقر سامان کلیم است

فر شاهنشهی زیر گلیم است

Though a mendicant, I have the wherewithal of Moses: Kingly pomp under a beggar’s garment.

16

اگر خاکم به صحرائی نگنجم

اگر آبم به دریائی نگنجم

If I am earth, desert cannot contain me; if water, river cannot encompass me.

17

دل سنگ از زجاج من بلرزد

یم افکار من ساحل نورزد

The heart of a stone trembles at my glass, the ocean of my thought is without a shore.

18

نهان تقدیر ها در پردهٔ من

قیامت ها بغل پروردهٔ من

Behind my curtain lie concealed several destinies, and several resurrections take birth at my hand.

19

دمی در خویشتن خلوت گزیدم

جهانی لازوالی آفریدم

For a moment I retired unto myself, I created an immortal world.

20

«مرا زین شاعری خود عار ناید

که در صد قرن یک عطار ناید»

‘I am not ashamed of such poetry, for in a hundred years an Attar might not appear.’

21

بجانم رزم مرگ و زندگانی است

نگاهم بر حیات جاودانی است

A battle of life and death is being waged in my soul; my eye is riveted on immortal life.

22

ز جان خاک ترا بیگانه دیدم

به اندام تو جان خود دمیدم

I saw your clay stranger to life, hence I breathed into your body of my own soul.

23

از آن ناری که دارم داغ داغم

شب خود را بیفروز از چراغم

I am wholly affected by the fire that I possess: Illumine the darkness of your night by my lamp.

24

بخاک من دلی چون دانه کشتند

به لوح من خط دیگر نوشتند

Heart was sown into the soil of my body like a seed, a different destiny was written on my tablet:

25

مرا ذوق خودی چون انگبین است

چه گویم واردات من همین است

To me the ideal of khudi is sweet as honey. What else can I do? My whole stock consists of this experience.

نخستین کیف او را آزمودم

دگر بر خاوران قسمت نمودم

First I tasted the fruit of this experience myself, then I decided to share it with the people of the East.

27

اگر این نامه را جبریل خواند

چو گرد آن نور ناب از خود فشاند

If Gabriel were to go through this book, he would cast aside the pure \[Divine\] Light as if it were dust;

28

بنالد از مقام و منزل خویش

به یزدان گوید از حال دل خویش

He would bewail about his \[low\] station, and relate to God the condition of his heart:

تجلی را چنان عریان نخواهم

نخواهم جز غم پنهان نخواهم

‘I no longer desire unveiled Epiphany; I desire nothing but hidden heart-sore.

30

گذشم از وصال جاودانی

که بینم لذت آه و فغانی

I am ready to forego eternal union, for now I realize what sweetness is in lamentation!

31

مرا ناز و نیاز آدمی ده

به جان من گداز آدمی ده

Give me the pride and submissiveness of man, give unto my heart burning and consuming of man.’

چه چیز است آنکه گویندش تفکر

First of all I am perplexed about my thought: What is that which is called ‘thought’?

کدامین فکر ما را شرط راه است

چرا گه طاعت و گاهی گناه است

What sort of thought is the condition of my path? Why is it sometimes obedience, sometimes sin?

چه نور است این که غیب او حضور است

What a light there is within the heart of man! A light that is manifest in spite of its invisibility.

من او را ثابت سیار دیدم

من او را نور دیدم نار دیدم

I saw it in the constancy of change; I saw it both as light and fire.

36

گهی نازش ز برهان و دلیل است

گهی نورش ز جان جبرئیل است

Sometimes its fire is nourished by argumentation and reasoning, sometimes its light is derived from the breath of Gabriel;

37

چه نوری جان فروزی سینه تابی

نیرزد با شعاعش آفتابی

What a life-illuminating and heart-kindling light! The sun is nothing in face of a single ray of this light.

38

بخاک آلوده و پاک از مکان است

به بند روز و شب پاک از زمان است

Conjoined with dust, it is above limitations of space; chained to the alternation of day and night, it is free from the bonds of time.

39

شمار روزگارش از نفس نیست

چنین جوینده و یابنده کس نیست

The calculation of its time is not through breath, there is none like it in seeking and discovering.

40

گهی وامانده و ساحل مقامش

گهی دریای بی پایان بجامش

Sometimes it feels exhausted and sits on the shore, sometimes a shore-less ocean is in its cup.

41

همین دریا همین چوب کلیم است

که از وی سینه دریا دو نیم است

It is both the river and the staff of Moses, on account of which the river is divided into two.

42

غزالی مرغزارش آسمانی

خورد آبی ز جوی کهکشانی

It is a deer whose pasture is the sky, who drinks water from the stream of the Milky Way.

43

زمین و آسمان او را مقامی

میان کاروان تنها خرامی

Earth and sky are its halting places; it walks alone amid a caravan.

44

ز احوالش جهان ظلمت و نور

صدای صور و مرگ و جنت و حور

Some of its states are: the world of darkness and light, the sound of the trumpet, death, paradise, and Houri.

45

ازو ابلیس و آدم را نمودی

ازو ابلیس و آدم را گشودی

It gives both to Iblis and Adam opportunity to develop, and provides them a chance of expansions.

46

نگه از جلوهٔ او ناشکیب است

تجلی های او یزدان فریب است

Eye is impatient at its sight; its charms even beguile God.

47

به چشمی خلوت خود را ببیند

به چشمی جلوت خود را ببیند

48

اگر یک چشم بر بندد گناهی است

اگر با هر دو بیند شرط راهی است

With one eye, it sees its own privacy, with the other eye; it looks at its apparent lustre.

49

ز جوی خویش بحری آفریند

گهر گردد به قعر خود نشیند

Out of its little stream, it produces an ocean; it becomes a pearl and then settles at its bottom.

50

همان دم صورت دیگر پذیرد

شود غواص و خود را باز گیرد

Soon it takes a different form; becomes a diver and catches itself again.

51

درو هنگامه های بی خروش است

درو رنگ و صدا بی چشم و گوش است

In it there are noiseless commissions; it has colour and sound perceptible without eye and ear.

52

درون شیشهٔ او روزگار است

ولی بر ما بتدریج آشکار است

There is a world hidden in its glass, but it reveals itself to us piecemeal.

53

حیات از وی بر اندازد کمندی

شود صیاد هر پست و بلندی

Life makes it into a lasso and throws it to catch everything low and high.

54

ازو خود را به بند خود در آرد

گلوی ماسوا را هم فشارد

By its means it ensnares itself, and wrings also the neck of duality.

55

دو عالم می شود روزی شکارش

فتد اندر کمند تابدارش

One day the two worlds fall a prey to it and are caught into its beautiful lasso.

56

اگر این هر دو عالم را بگیری

همه آفاق میرد ، تو نمیری

If you conquer both these worlds, you will become immortal even if everything else dies.

57

منه پا در بیابان طلب سست

نخستین گیر آن عالم که در تست

Do not set foot in the desert of search lazily; first, take hold of that world which lies within you.

58

اگر زیری ز خود گیری زبر شو

خدا خواهی بخود نزدیک تر شو

If you are low, become strong by conquering the self. If you wish to seek God, get nearer yourself.

59

به تسخیر خود افتادی اگر طاق

ترا آسان شود تسخیر آفاق

If you become proficient in conquering self, conquering the world will become easy for you.

60

خنک روزی که گیری این جهان را

شکافی سینه نه آسمان را

Happy is the day when you conquer this world, and pierce the bosom of the skies.

61

گذارد ماه پیش تو سجودی

برو پیچی کمند از موج دودی

The moon will prostrate before you, and you throw over it a lasso of waves of smoke.

62

درین دیر کهن آزاد باشی

بتان را بر مراد خود تراشی

You will be free in this ancient world, able to fashion the idols to your purpose;

63

بکف بردن جهان چار سو را

مقام نور و صوت و رنگ و بو را

To hold in the grasp of your hand all the world of light and sound, of colour and smell;

64

فزونش کم کم او بیش کردن

دگرگون بر مراد خویش کردن

To change its quantitative aspect, to mould it according to your purpose;

65

به رنج و راحت او دل نبستن

طلسم نه سپهر او شکستن

Not to be captivated by its sorrows and delights to break the spell of its nine skies;

66

فرورفتن چو پیکان در ضمیرش

ندادن گندم خود با شعیرش

To go down into its heart like the point of an arrow, not to exchange your wheat for its barley;

67

شکوه خسروی این است این است

همین ملک است کو توام بدین است

This is indeed the-true kingly glory; this is the State that is linked to religion.

What is this ocean whose shore is knowledge? What is that pearl which is found in its depth?

شعور آگهی او را کرانی

Ever-moving Life is a flowing ocean, consciousness is its shore.

چه دریائی که ژرف و موج داراست

هزاران کوه و صحرا بر کنار است

What an ocean that is deep and surging a thousand mountains and deserts are on its bank.

مپرس از موجهای بیقرارش

که هر موجش برون جست از کنارش

Don’t talk about its surging waves, for each had overflowed its bank.

گذشت از بحر و صحرا را نمی داد

نگه را لذت کیف و کمی داد

It left the ocean and imparted moisture to the desert; it gave to the eye the sense of quantity and quality.

73

هر آن چیزی که آید در حضورش

منور گردد از فیض شعورش

Whatever thing comes into its presence gets illumined through the grace of its consciousness.

74

بخلوت مست و صحبت ناپذیر است

ولی هر شی ز نورش مستنیر است

It is satisfied with its privacy and is not inclined to association with others, yet all things are illumined by its light.

نخستین می نماید مستنیرش

کند آخر به آئینی اسیرش

First it brightens it up, then it ensnares it in a mirror.

76

شعورش با جهان نزدیک تر کرد

جهان او را ز راز او خبر کرد

Its consciousness makes it familiar with the world, the world made it aware of its potentiality.

77

خرد بند نقاب از رخ گشودش

ولیکن نطق عریان تر نمودش

Intellect removes veil from its face, but speech reveals it much better.

78

نگنجد اندرین دیر مکافات

جهان او را مقامی از مقامات

Yet it is not confined to this mundane world \- it is only one of its stages in the path of evolution.

79

برون از خویش می بینی جهانرا

در و دشت و یم و صحرا و کان را

You look upon the world as existing outside you: These mountains and deserts, oceans and mines;

80

جهان رنگ و بو گلدستهٔ ما

ز ما آزاد و هم وابستهٔ ما

This world of colour and smell is our nosegay; it is independent and yet intimately related to us.

81

خودی او را بیک تار نگه بست

زمین و آسمان و مهر و مه بست

The ego bound them all by its one glance: The earth and the sky, the moon and the sun.

82

دل ما را به او پوشیده راهی است

که هر موجود ممنون نگاهی است

Our heart has a secret gateway to it, for every existent depends for its existence upon our perception.

83

گر او را کس نبیند زار گردد

اگر بیند ، یم و کهسار گردد

If nobody sees, it becomes contemptible; if anybody sees, it becomes mountains and oceans.

84

جهان را فربهی از دیدن ما

نهالش رسته از بالیدن ما

The world has significance through our seeing it – its tree grows by our growth.

حدیث ناظر و منظور رازی است

دل هر ذره در عرض نیازی است

The problem of subject and object is a mystery; the heart of every particle of matter is expressing its supplication:

تو ای شاهد مرا مشهود گردان

ز فیض یک نظر موجود گردان

O observer, make me your object, make me existent by the grace of your sight.

کمال ذات شی موجود بودن

برای شاهدی مشهود بودن

The perfection of the being of a thing lies in being present, in becoming an object for an observer;

88

زوالش در حضور ما نبودن

منور از شعور ما نبودن

Its defect, not to be before our eyes, not to be illumined by our awareness.

89

جهان غیر از تجلی های ما نیست

که بی ما جلوهٔ نور و صدا نیست

The world is nothing but our manifestation, for without us there would be no world of light and sound;

90

تو هم از صحبتش یاری طلب کن

نگه را از خم و پیچش ادب کن

You also should crave help by associating with it; discipline your eyes by its twists and turns.

91

«یقین میدان که شیران شکاری

درین ره خواستند از مور یاری»

Rest assured that master-huntsmen have sought help in this matter from insects.

92

بیاری های او از خود خبر گیر

تو جبریل امینی بال و پر گیر

With its help, keep a watchful eye on yourself; you are like Gabriel the truthful; take wings.

93

به بسیاری گشا چشم خرد را

که دریابی تماشای احد را

Open the eye of intellect on this world of plurality, so that you may enjoy the revelations of the One.

94

نصیبب خود ز بوی پیرهن گیر

به کنعان نکهت از مصر و یمن گیر

Take your share from the smell of the shirt, while sitting in Kan‘an, get fragrance from Egypt and Yemen.

خودی صیاد و نخچیرش مه و مهر

اسیر بند تدبیرش مه و مهر

Ego is the hunter, the sun and the moon are its prey; they are chained to the strings of his intellectual efforts.

چو آتش خویش را اندر جهان زن

شبیخون بر مکان و لامکان زن

Throw yourself on this world like fire! Make an assault on the visible and the invisible worlds alike.

ہیں، خرد جہان کے بیش و کم معلوم کرنے والی ہے۔ (dimensions) اس کائنات کے تین البعاد The world of how and why has three dimension intellect controls its quantitative aspect.

جهان طوسی و اقلیدس است این

پی عقل زمین فرسا بس است این

This is the world of Tusi and Euclid: The fit object of earth-measuring intellect.

زمانش هم مکانش اعتباری است

زمین و آسمانش اعتباری است

Its time and space are relative, and so are its earth and sky.

کمان را زه کن و آماج دریاب

ز حرفم نکتهٔ معراج دریاب

Draw your bow and find the target, learn from me the secret of ascension.

مجو مطلق درین دیر مکافات

که مطلق نیست جز نورالسموات

Do not seek the Absolute in this mundane world, for the Absolute is nothing but the Light of the Heavens.

حقیقت لازوال و لامکان است

مگو دیگر که عالم بیکران است

کران او درون است و برون نیست

درونش پست ، بالا کم فزون نیست

Its limit is internal, not external; there are no distinctions of low and high, more or less, in its internal aspect.

درونش خالی از بالا و زیر است

ولی بیرون او وسعت پذیر است

Its internal aspect is devoid of high and low, but its external aspect is liable to extension.

ابد را عقل ما ناسازگار است

«یکی» از گیر و دار او هزار است

Infinity is not amenable to our intellect; ‘One’ in its hand becomes a thousand.

چو لنگ است او سکون را دوست دارد

نبیند مغز و دل بر پوست دارد

As it is lame, it likes rest; it does not see the kernel; it therefore looks towards the shell.

حقیقت را چو ما صد پاره کردیم

تمیز ثابت و سیاره کردیم

As we divided Reality into several spheres, we made a distinction of change and rest.

خرد در لامکان طرح مکان بست

چو زناری زمان را بر میان بست

In non-spatial sphere intellect introduced spatial categories, like a belt it girdled time round its waist.

زمان را در ضمیر خود ندیدم

مه و سال و شب و روز آفریدم

We did not look for time within the depth of our hearts, and so we created months and years, nights and days.

مه و سالت نمی ارزد بیک جو

بحرف «کم لبثتم» غوطه زن شو

Your months and years are of no value: just ponder over the Quranic verse, ‘How long did you remain?’

بخود رس از سر هنگامه بر خیز

تو خود را در ضمیر خود فرو ریز

Reach within yourself and retire from this noisy world, throw yourself into the inner recesses of your heart.

تن و جان را دو تا گفتن کلام است

تن و جان را دو تا دیدن حرام است

To talk of body and soul as two separate entities is wrong; to see them as two is sinful.

بجان پوشیده رمز کائنات است

بدن خالی ز احوال حیات است

The whole secret of the universe lies in the soul, body is one of its modes of expression.

115

عروس معنی از صورت حنا بست

نمود خویش را پیرایه ها بست

The bride of Reality adorned itself by the henna of form; it assumed different shapes for its manifestation.

116

حقیقت روی خود را پرده باف است

که او را لذتی در انکشاف است

Reality weaves veils for its face, for it finds delight in display.

بدن را تا فرنگ از جان جدا دید

نگاهش ملک و دین را هم دو تا دید

Since the West viewed body and soul as separate, it also regarded State and Religion as two.

کلیسا سبحهٔ پطرس شمارد

که او با حاکمی کاری ندارد

The churchman only tells his beads, for he has no work of the State to perform.

بکار حاکمی مکر و فنی بین

تن بیجان و جان بی تنی بین

See deceit and artifice in statecraft: It is a body without a soul, or a soul without a body.

خرد را با دل خود همسفر کن

یکی بر ملت ترکان نظر کن

Make intellect a companion of your heart; behold, for instance, the Turkish nation.

به تقلید فرنگ از خود رمیدند

میان ملک و دین ربطی ندیدند

By imitation of the West, the Turks lost their individuality; they did not see any link between State and Religion.

«یکی» را آنچنان صد پاره دیدیم

عدد بهر شمارش آفریدیم

We looked at the One as compound of so many parts that we created numerals to count it.

123

کهن دیری که بینی مشت خاکست

دمی از سر گذشت ذات پاکست

Do you think that this ancient world is a handful of earth? It is a fleeting moment of God’s activity.

124

حکیمان مرده را صورت نگارند

ید موسی دم عیسی ندارند

The scientists tend to adorn a dead body; they neither possess the Hand of Moses nor the Breath of Jesus.

درین حکمت دلم چیزی ندید است

برای حکمت دیگر تپید است

I have seen nothing of value in this type of science; I have been craving for a wisdom of another sort.

من این گویم جهان در انقلابست

درونش زنده و در پیچ و تابست

I believe that the world is undergoing a revolution, its inside is alive and in convulsions.

ز اعداد و شمار خویش بگذر

یکی در خود نظر کن پیش بگذر

Pass beyond your numerals, look for a while within your self and leave.

در آن عالم که جزو از کل فزون است

قیاس رازی و طوسی جنون است

In a universe where a part is greater than the whole, the calculations of Razi and Tusi are irrelevant.

زمانی با ارسطو آشنا باش

دمی با ساز بیکن هم نوا باش

For a while familiarize yourself with Aristotle, for another while sit in the company of Bacon.

و لیکن از مقامشان گذر کن

مشو گم اندرین منزل سفر کن

But then you must pass beyond their stand, don’t get lost in this stage, journey on.

به آن عقلی که داند بیش و کم را

شناسد اندرون کان و یم را

With the aid of that intellect that deals with quantities probe the depths of mines and oceans;

جهان چند و چون زیر نگین کن

بگردون ماه و پروین را کمین کن

Master the world of how and why; catch the moon and Pleiades from the sky.

133

و لیکن حکمت دیگر بیاموز

رهان خود را از این مکر شب و روز

But then learn wisdom of another sort; free yourself from the snare of night and day.

مقام تو برون از روزگار است

طلب کن آن یمین کو بی یسار است

Your real place is beyond this mundane world, aspire for a right that is without a left.

The life of the ego is to bring non-ego into existence, the separation of the knower and known is good.

Our ideas of eternal and temporal are due to our way of reckoning; our reckoning is the result of the spell of mathematical time.

دمادم دوش و فردا می شماریم

به هست و بود و باشد کار داریم

We constantly talk of yesterday and tomorrow, we deal with ‘is’, ‘was’, and ‘might be’.

ازو خود را بریدن فطرت ماست

تپیدن نارسیدن فطرت ماست

To sever ourselves from Him is our nature, and also to be restless and not to reach the goal.

141

نه ما را در فراق او عیاری

نه او را بی وصال ما قراری

Neither do we get worth in separation from Him, nor does He feel peace without union with us;

142

نه او بی ما نه ، بی او چه حال است

فراق ما فراق اندر وصال است

Neither He without us, nor we without Him! How strange! Our separation is separation ‘in’ union.

143

جدائی خاک را بخشد نگاهی

دهد سرمایه کوهی بکاهی

Separation gives to this dust (i.e. man) an insight, it gives the weight of a mountain to a straw.

جدائی عشق را آئینه دار است

جدائی عاشقان را سازگار است

Separation is a token of love; it agrees with the nature of lovers.

145

اگر ما زنده ایم از دردمندی است

وگر پاینده ایم از دردمندی است

If we are alive, it is due to this affliction (of separation), and if we are immortal, it is due to it.

من و او چیست اسرار الهی است

من و او بر دوام ما گواهی است

What is ‘I’ and ‘He’? It is a divine mystery! ‘I’ and ‘He’ are a witness to our immortality.

بخلوت هم بجلوت نور ذات است

میان انجمن بودن حیات است

The light of the Essence is everywhere, hidden and apparent; to live in company is real life.

محبت دیده ور بی انجمن نیست

محبت خود نگر بی انجمن نیست

Love does not acquire insight without company, and without company, it does not become self-conscious.

به بزم ما تجلی هاست بنگر

جهان ناپید و او پیداست بنگر

In our assembly, there are divine manifestations, behold! The world is non-existent and He is existent, behold.

در و دیوار و شهر و کاخ و کو نیست

که اینجا هیچکس جز ما و او نیست

Doors and walls, cities, towns and streets are not there, for here there is nothing existent except we and He.

گهی خود را ز ما بیگانه سازد

گهی ما را چو سازی می نوازد

Sometimes He makes Himself a stranger to us; sometimes He plays upon us as upon a musical instrument.

گهی از سنگ تصویرش تراشیم

گهی نادیده بر وی سجده پاشیم

Sometimes we fashion His idol out of stone, sometimes we prostrate before Him without having seen Him.

گهی هر پردهٔ فطرت دریدیم

جمال یار بیباکانه دیدیم

Sometimes we tear every veil of Nature, and boldly see His beautiful face.

چه سودا در سر این مشت خاکست

ازین سودا درونش تابناکست

What fancy has this handful of dust? It is due to this fancy that his inner self is illumined.

چه خوش سودا که نالد از فراقش

و لیکن هم ببالد از فراقش

What a nice fancy that he bewails in separation and yet he grows and develops through it.

فراق او چنان صاحب نظر کرد

که شام خویش را بر خود سحر کرد

This separation developed in him such a spiritual insight, that he turned his dusk into a dawn.

خودی را دردمندامتحان ساخت

غم دیرینه را عیش جوان ساخت

He made the ego subject to affliction: Thus turned the ancient grief into an ever-living joy.

گهر ها سلک سلک از چشم تر برد

ز نخل ماتمی شیرین ثمر برد

He got strings of pearls from the tears of his eyes from the tree of bewailing he got sweet fruit.

خودی را تنگ در آغوش کردن

فنا را با بقا هم دوش کردن

To press the ego tightly to the bosom is to turn death into everlasting life.

محبت در گذشتن از نهایات

What is Love? It is to tie all the different stages in a knot. What is Love? It is to pass beyond all goals.

محبت ذوق انجامی ندارد

طلوع صبح او شامی ندارد

Love does not know of any termination, its dawn has no dusk.

براهش چون خرد پیچ و خمی هست

جهانی در فروغ یکدمی هست

There are no bends in its way as in that of intellect, in its lustre of a moment, there is a world.

هزاران عالم افتد در ره ما

بپایان کی رسد جولانگه ما

Thousands of worlds lie along our path, how can our endeavours reach their finale?

مسافر جاودان زی جاودان میر

جهانی را که پیش آید فراگیر

O traveler I live for ever and die for ever, take hold of the world that comes before you.

به بحرش گم شدن انجام ما نیست

اگر او را تو در گیری فنا نیست

It is not the goal of our journey to merge ourselves in His Ocean. If you catch hold of Him, it is not fana (extinction).

خودی اندر خودی گنجد محال است

خودی را عین خود بودن کمال است

It is impossible for an ego to be absorbed in another ego, for the ego to be itself is its perfection.

نه ما را بی گشود او نمودی

Neither it develops without our expansion, nor do we expand without its development.

ضمیرش بحر ناپیدا کناری

دل هر قطره موج بیقراری

Its inner core is a shoreless sea; the heart of every drop is a tumultuous wave.

سر و برگ شکیبائی ندارد

بجز افراد پیدائی ندارد

It has no inclination to rest; its manifestation is nothing but individuals.

حیات آتش خودیها چون شررها

چو انجم ثابت و اندر سفر ها

Life is fire and egos are like its flames; like stars they are (both) stationary and moving.

ز خود نا رفته بیرون غیر بین است

میان انجمن خلوت نشین است

Without going outside, it looks towards others; though in company, is yet in privacy.

یکی بنگر بخود پیچیدن او

ز خاک پی سپر بالیدن او

Just see its self-meditation; it develops out of the trodden earth.

نهان از دیده ها در های و هوئی

دمادم جستجوی رنگ و بوئی

Hidden from the eyes, it is in tumult, it is constantly in search of adornment.

ز سوز اندرون در جست و خیز است

به آئینی که با خود در ستیز است

It is in perpetual activity through its internal ardour, as if it is at war with itself.

جهان را از ستیز او نظامی

کف خاک از ستیز آئینه فامی

The world gets order through this strife of the ego! A handful of dust becomes translucent through strife.

نریزد جز خودی از پرتو او

نخیزد جز گهر اندر زو او

From its ray, nothing comes into being save egos, from its sea, nothing appears save pearls.

خودی را پیکر خاکی حجاب است

طلوع او مثال آفتاب است

The earthly garb is a veil for khudi; its appearance is like the rising of the sun.

درون سینهٔ ما خاور او

فروغ خاک ما از جوهر او

In the innermost heart of ours is its sun, our dust is illumined through its potency.

تو میگوئی مرا از «من» خبر کن

چه معنی دارد «اندر خود سفرکن»؟

You ask to be informed about ‘I’, and what is meant by ‘travel into yourself’.

سفر در خود کن و بنگر که «من »چیست

I informed you about the relation of body and soul travel into yourself and see what ‘I’ is.

سفر در خویش زادن بی اب و مام

ثریا را گرفتن از لب بام

To travel into self: It is to be born without father and mother, to catch Pleiades from the edge of the roof;

ابد بردن بیک دم اضطرابی

تماشا بی شعاع آفتابی

To hold eternity with a single stroke of anguish, to see without the rays of the sun;

ستردن نقش هر امید و بیمی

زدن چاکی به دریا چون کلیمی

To obliterate every sign of hope and fear, to sunder the river like Moses;

187

شکستن این طلسم بحر و بر را

ز انگشتی شکافیدن قمر را

To break this spell of sea and land, to split the moon with a finger.

چنان باز آمدن از لامکانش

درون سینه او در کف جهانش

So to return from this experience of the spaceless world, that it is within his heart, and the world in his hand.

ولی این راز را گفتن محال است

که دیدن شیشه و گفتن سفال است

But it is difficult to unravel this secret: Here ‘seeing’ is valuable and ‘describing’ worthless.

چه گویم از «من» و از توش و تابش

کند« انا عرضنا» بی نقابش

What can I say about ‘I’ and its brilliance? It is manifest from the Quranic text, ‘We proposed’.

فلک را لرزه بر تن از فر او

زمان و هم مکان اندر بر او

The heavens are in terror of its glory, time and space are in its grip.

نشیمن را دل آدم نهاد است

نصیب مشت خاکی او فتاد است

It sought refuge in the heart of man, and has fallen to the lot of this handful of dust.

جدا از غیر و هم وابستهٔ غیر

گم اندر خویش و هم پیوستهٔ غیر

It is distinct from the other and yet related to it, is lost within itself and yet conjoined with the other.

خیال اندر کف خاکی چسان است

که سیرش بی مکان و بی زمان است

What kind of aspiration this handful of dust has that its flight is beyond the limitations of time and space.

بزندان است و آزاد است این چیست

کمند و صید و صیاد است این چیست

It is in prison and yet free! What is this? It is the lasso, the prey, and the hunter! What is this?

چراغی در میان سینهٔ تست

چه نور است این که در آئینهٔ تست

There is a lamp within your heart; what is this light which is in your mirror?

مشو غافل که تو او را امینی

چه نادانی که سوی خود نبینی

Don’t be negligent; you are its trustee, what folly that you do not look within your self!

به ظلمت مانده و نوری در آغوش

برون از جنت و حوری در آغوش

It lies in darkness and yet has a light in its bosom, outside the paradise and yet has a houri in embrace!

به آن نطقی دل آویزی که دارد

ز قعر زندگی گوهر بر آرد

With the charming wisdom that it possesses, it brings out pearls from the depth of life.

ضمیر زندگانی جاودانی است

بچشم ظاهرش بینی زمانی است

The impulse of life is eternal, but looked at from outside, it is bound by time.

به تقدیرش مقام هست و بود است

نمود خویش و حفظ این نمود است

Upon its destiny depends the position of this universe, its manifestation and preservation of it.

چه میپرسی چه گون است و چه گون نیست

که تقدیر از نهاد او برون نیست

What do you ask about its nature? Destiny is not something separate from its nature.

چه گویم از چگون و بی چگونش

برون مجبور و مختار اندرونش

What should I say about its character? Outwardly it is determined, inwardly it is free.

چنین فرمودهٔ سلطان بدر است

که ایمان در میان جبر و قدر است

Such is the saying of the Lord of Badr, that faith lies between determinism and indeterminism.

209

تو هر مخلوق را مجبور گوئی

اسیر بند نزد و دور گوئی

You call every creature to be determined, to be confined to the chains of ‘near’ and ‘far’.

210

ولی جان از دم جان آفرین است

به چندین جلوه ها خلوت نشین است

But the soul is from the breath of the Creator, which lives in privacy with all its manifestations.

211

ز جبر او حدیثی در میان نیست

که جان بی فطرت آزاد جان نیست

Determinism with regard to it is out of question, for soul without freedom is not a soul.

212

شبیخون بر جهان کیف و کم زد

ز مجبوری به مختاری قدم زد

It lay in ambush on this world of quantitative measurements. From determinism it passed over to freedom.

چو از خود گرد مجبوری فشاند

جهان خویش را چون ناقه راند

When it (ego) removes from itself the dust of determinism, it drives its world like a camel.

نگردد آسمان بی رخصت او

نتابد اختری بی شفقت او

The sky does not revolve without its permission, nor do stars shine without its grace.

کند بی پرده روزی مضمرش را

بچشم خویش بیند جوهرش را

One day it reveals its hidden nature, and sees its essence with its own eyes.

قطار نوریان در رهگذار است

پی دیدار او در انتظار است

Rows of heavenly choir stand on either side of the road, waiting for a glimpse of its countenance.

شراب افرشته از تاکش بگیرد

عیار خویش از خاکش بگیرد

The angel gets wine from its vine; it gets significance from its earth.

چه پرسی از طریق جستجویش

فرو آرد مقام های و هویش

You ask about the way of its seeking; come down to the state of lamentation.

شب و روزی که داری بر ابد زن

فغان صبحگاهی بر خرد زن

Change your days and nights for eternity, change from intellect to the morning lamentation (intuition).

220

خرد را از حواس آید متاعی

فغان از عشق می گیرد شعاعی

Intellect has its source in senses, lamentation gets light from love.

221

خرد جز را فغان کل را بگیرد

خرد میرد فغان هرگز نمیرد

Intellect grasps the part, lamentation the whole. Intellect dies but lamentation is immortal.

خرد بهر ابد ظرفی ندارد

نفس چون سوزن ساعت شمارد

Intellect has no categories to comprehend eternity; it counts moments as the hands of the watch.

تراشد روز ها شب ها سحر ها

نگیرد شعله و چیند شرر ها

It contrives days and nights and mornings; it cannot catch the flames; therefore it takes on sparks.

فغان عاشقان انجام کاریست

نهان در یکدم او روزگاریست

The lamentation of the lovers is the ultimate goal, in one moment of it lies hidden a world.

خودی تا ممکناتش وا نماید

گره از اندرون خود گشاید

When the ego manifests its potentialities, it removes its inner knots and veil.

از آن نوری که وا بیند نداری

تو او را فانی و آنی شماری

You do not have that light by which it sees. You look upon it as momentary and mortal.

از آن مرگی که میآید چه باک است

خودی چون پخته شد از مرگ پاک است

Why fear that death which comes from without? For when the ‘I’ ripens into a self it has no danger of dissolution.

ز مرگ دیگری لرزد دل من

دل من جان من آب و گل من

There is a more subtle inner death which makes me tremble!

ز کار عشق و مستی برفتادن

شرار خود به خاشاکی ندادن

This death is falling down from love’s frenzy, saving one’s spark and not giving it away freely to the heaps of chaff;

بدست خود کفن بر خود بریدن

بچشم خویش مرگ خویش دیدن

Cutting one’s shroud with one’s own hands; seeing one’s death with one’s own eyes;

231

ترا این مرگ هر دم در کمین است

بترس از وی که مرگ ما همین است

This death lies in ambush for thee! Fear it, for that is really our death.

کند گور تو اندر پیکر تو

نکیر و منکر او در بر تو

It digs your grave in your body; its Munkar and Nakir are with it.

To travel while at rest is: To travel from one’s self to one’s self.

کسی اینجا نداند ما کجائیم

که در چشم مه و اختر نیائیم

None knows here where we are, that we look so insignificant in the eyes of moon and stars.

مجو پایان که پایانی نداری

بپایان تا رسی جانی نداری

Don’t seek the end of the journey; for you have no end; as soon as you reach the end, you lose your soul.

نه ما را پخته پنداری که خامیم

بهر منزل تمام و ناتمامیم

Do not look upon us as ripe; for we are raw, at every destination we are perfect and imperfect.

بپایان نارسیدن زندگانی است

سفر ما را حیات جاودانی است

Not to reach the end is life; immortal life for us lies in constant traveling.

ز ماهی تا به مه جولانگه ما

مکان و هم زمان گرد ره ما

The whole world from the centre of the earth to the moon is within our reach, time and space are like dust in our path.

بخود پیچیم و بیتاب نمودیم

که ما موجیم و از قعر وجودیم

Our selves are our centres and pine for manifestation, for we are waves and rise from the bottom of Being.

دمادم خویش را اندر کمین باش

گریزان از گمان سوی یقین باش

Lie in constant ambush against the self, fly from doubt to faith and certainty.

تب و تاب محبت را فنا نیست

یقین و دید را نیز انتها نیست

The fire and ardour of love are not subject to extinction; faith and ‘sight’ have no end.

244

کمال زندگی دیدار ذات است

طریقش رستن از بند جهات است

The perfection of life consists in seeing the Essence, the way of achieving it is to free oneself from the limits of time and space.

چنان با ذات حق خلوت گزینی

ترا او بیند و او را تو بینی

You should enjoy privacy with the Divine Person in such a way, that He sees you and you see Him.

246

منور شو ز نور «من یرانی»

مژه برهم مزن تو خود نمانی

Become illumined by the light of ‘what you see.’ Do not wink; otherwise you will be no more.

247

بخود محکم گذر اندر حضورش

مشو ناپید اندر بحر نورش

In His presence, be strong and self-possessed; don’t merge yourself in the ocean of His Light.

نصیب ذره کن آن اضطرابی

که تابد در حریم آفتابی

Bestow that perturbation to the mote that it may shine in the vicinity of the sun.

چنان در جلوه گاه یار میسوز

عیان خود را نهان او را برافروز

So burn amid the splendour of the Beloved that you may illumine yourself in public and Him in privacy.

کسی کو دید عالم را امام است

من تو ناتمامیم او تمام است

He who ‘saw’ is the leader of the world, we and you are imperfect; he alone is perfect.

اگر او را نیابی در طلب خیز

اگر یابی به دامانش در آویز

If you do not find him, rise in search of him; if you find him, attach yourself to him.

فقیه و شیخ و ملا را مده دست

مرو مانند ماهی غافل از شست

Do not allow yourself to be guided by the faqih, shaikh, and mulla; like fish, do not walk about careless of the hook.

بکار ملک و دین او مرد راهی است

که ما کوریم و او صاحب نگاهی است

He is a man of the path in matters of State and religion; we are blind and he is a man of insight.

مثال آفتاب صبحگاهی

دمد از هر بن مویش نگاهی

Like the sun of the morning, wisdom shines from every root of his hair.

فرنگ آئین جمهوری نهاد ست

رسن از گردن دیوی گشادست

The West has set up the rule of democracy; it has untied the rope from the neck of a fiend.

نوا بی زخمه و سازی ندارد

ابی طیاره پروازی ندارد

It does not possess sound without plectrum and musical instruments, without a flying machine it does not possess the power of flying.

ز باغش کشت ویرانی نکوتر

ز شهر او بیابانی نکوتر

A desolate field is better than its garden, a desert is better than its city.

چو رهزن کاروانی در تک و تاز

شکمها بهر نانی در تک و تاز

Like a marauding caravan it is active, its people are ever busy in satisfying their hunger.

روان خوابید و تن بیدار گردید

هنر با دین و دانش خوار گردید

Its soul became dormant, and its body awoke; art, science and religion all became contemptible.

خرد جز کافری کافر گری نیست

فن افرنگ جز مردم دری نیست

Intellect is nothing but fostering of unbelief, the art of the West is nothing but man-killing.

گروهی را گروهیدر کمین است

خدایش یار اگر کارش چنین است

A group lies in ambush against another group, such a state of affairs is sure to lead to disaster.

ز من ده اهل مغرب را پیامی

که جمهور است تیغ بی نیامی

Convey my message to the West that the ideal of democracy is a sword out of its sheath:

چه شمشیری که جانها می ستاند

تمیز مسلم و کافر نداند

What a sword that it kills men and does not make a distinction between a believer and an unbeliever!

برد جان خود و جان جهانی

If it does not remain in the sheath for a little more time, it will kill itself as well as the world.

The Magi in the circle of his followers said: ‘Life was taken in by itself and uttered ‘I’.

خدا خفت و وجود ما ز خوابش

وجود ما نمود ما ز خوابش

God went to sleep and our being is through His dream; our existence and appearance are merely His dreams.

مقام تحت وفوق و چار سو خواب

سکون و سیر و شوق و جستجو خواب

Down and above, all four dimensions are illusions, rest and motion, desire and search are all illusions!

دل بیدار و عقل نکته بین خواب

گمان و فکر و تصدیق و یقین خواب

Wakeful heart and wise intellect, a dream; dread and anxiety, certainty and belief, a dream.

ترا این چشم بیداری بخواب است

ترا گفتار و کرداری بخواب است

Your wakeful eye is in reality in a state of dream, your speech and action are all in a dream!

چو او بیدار گردد دیگری نیست

متاع شوق را سوداگری نیست

When He wakes up, nothing else remains; there is no customer for the merchandise of yearning.’

فروغ دانش ما از قیاس است

قیاس ما ز تقدیر حواس است

The development of our intellect is through reasoning; our reasoning depends upon the nature of the senses.

چو حس دیگر شد این عالم دگر شد

سکون و سیر و کیف و کم دگر شد

When sense changes, this world becomes different: Rest and motion, quality and quantity are changed.

توان گفتن جهان رنگ و بو نیست

زمین و آسمان و کاخ و کو نیست

It can be said that the world of colour and smell is non-existent, earth and sky, house and street, are nothing.

توان گفتن که خوابی یا فسونی است

حجاب چهره آن بی چگونی است

It can be said that all these are dreams or illusions, or veils over the countenance of the Divine Person.

توان گفتن همه نیرنگ هوش است

فریب پرده های چشم و گوش است

It can be said that all is sorcery of the senses, a deception produced by our eyes and ears.

خودی از کائنات رنگ و بو نیست

حواس ما میان ما و او نیست

But the ego does not belong to the universe of colour and smell; our senses do not intervene between us and it.

نگه را در حریمش نیست راهی

کنی خود را تماشا بی نگاهی

Eyesight has no access to its sacred precincts; you can see ‘self’ without eyesight.

حساب روزش از دور فلک نیست

بخود بینی ظن و تخمین و شک نیست

The calculation of its days is not through the revolution of the sky; if you look within, there is no doubt or misgiving about it.

اگر کوئی که «من» وهم و گمان است

نمودش چون نمود این و آن است

If you say that the ‘I’ is a mere illusion: An appearance among other appearances.

بگو با من که دارای گمان کیست

یکی در خود نگر آن بی نشان کیست

Then tell me who is the subject of this illusion; look within and discover.

جهان پیدا و محتاج دلیلی

نمیآید به فکر جبرئیلی

The world is visible, yet its existence needs proof! Not even the intellect of an angel can comprehend it.

خودی پنهان ز حجت بی نیاز است

یکی اندیش و دریاب این چه رازست

The ‘I’ is invisible and needs no proof: Think awhile and see thine own secret!

خودی را حق بدان باطل مپندار

خودی را کشت بی حاصل مپندار

The ‘I’ is Truth, it is no illusion; don’t look upon it as a fruitless field.

خودی چون پخته گردد لازوالست

فراق عاشقان عین وصالست

When it ripens, it becomes eternal! Lovers, even though separated from the Beloved, live in blissful union!

شرر را تیز بالی میتوان داد

تپید لایزالی میتوان داد

It is possible to give wings to a mere spark, and to make it flutter for ever and for ever!

دوام حق جزای کار او نیست

که او را این دوام از جستجو نیست

The Eternity of God is (elemental and) not the reward of His action! For His eternity is not through seeking.

دوام آن به که جان مستعاری

شود از عشق و مستی پایداری

That eternity is superior, which a borrowed soul wins for herself by love’s frenzy.

وجود کوهسار و دشت و در هیچ

جهان فانی خودی باقی دگر هیچ

The being of mountains and deserts and cities is nothing, the universe is mortal, the ego immortal and nothing else matters.

291

دگر از شنکر و منصور کم گوی

خدا را هم براه خویشتن جوی

Do not talk of Shankar and Mansur any longer, seek God through seeking your own self.’

بخود گم بهر تحقیق خودی شو

انا الحق گوی و صدیق خودی شو

Be lost in your self to find the reality of the ego, say ‘I am the Truth’ and affirm the existence of the ego.

شناسای چه آمد عارف آخر؟

Who at last became familiar with the secret of unity? Who is the wise man that is agnostic?

ته گردون مقام دلپذیر است

و لیکن مهر و ماهش زود میر است

The world beneath the sky is a charming place, but its sun and moon are prone to decay.

بدوش شام نعش آفتابی

کواکب را کفن از ماهتابی

The corpse of the sun is carried on the shoulders of the evening; the stars vanish when the moon appears.

پرد کهسار چون ریگ روانی

دگرگون می شود دریا بآنی

The mountain flies like the moving sand, the river changes in a moment.

297

گلان را در کمین باد خزان است

متاع کاروان از بیم جان است

Autumn lies in ambush against the flowers; the merchandise of the caravan is the fear (of loss) of life.

ز شبنم لاله را گوهر نماند

دمی ماند دمی دیگر نماند

The tulip does not retain its beauty through dew, if it retains it for a while; it loses it the next moment.

299

نوا نشنیده در چنگی بمیرد

شرر ناجسته در سنگی بمیرد

The sound dies in the harp without being produced; the flame dies in the stone without manifesting itself.

مپرس از من ز عالمگیری مرگ

من و تو از نفس زنجیری مرگ

Don’t ask me about the universality of death, you and I are tied by our breaths to the chain of death.

فنا را بادهٔ هر جام کردند

فنا را بادهٔ هر جام کردند

چه بیدردانه او را عام کردند

Death is destined to be the wine of every cup, how ruthlessly has it been made common!

تماشا گاه مرگ ناگهان را

جهان ماه و انجم نام کردند

The arena of sudden death has been called the world of moon and stars.

303

اگر یک زره اش خوی رم آموخت

به افسون نگاهی رام کردند

If any particle of it learnt to fly, it was brought under control by the spell of sight.

304

قرار از ما چه میجوئی که ما را

اسیر گردش ایام کردند

Why do you seek rest for us? We are tied to the revolutions of the days.

305

خودی در سینهٔ چاکی نگهدار

ازین کوکب چراغ شام کردند

Be careful of the ego within your heart, from this star, the night was illumined.

306

جهان یکسر مقام آفلین است

درین غربت سرا عرفان همین است

The world is absolutely a place of decay; this is the gnosis in this strange land.

307

دل ما در تلاش باطلی نیست

نصیب ما غم بی حاصلی نیست

Our heart is not seeking anything futile; our lot is not fruitless grief.

نگه دارند اینجا آرزو را

سرور ذوق و شوق جستجو را

Desire is looked after here, and also the intoxication of the yearning of search.

309

خودی را لازوالی میتوان کرد

فراقی را وصالی میتوان کرد

Ego can be made immortal; separation can be changed into union.

310

چراغی از دم گرمی توان سوخت

به سوزن چاک گردون میتوان دوخت

A lamp can be lit by our hot breath; crack in the sky can be sewn by a needle.

311

خدای زنده بی ذوق سخن نیست

تجلی های او بی انجمن نیست

The Living God is not without a taste for beauty; his manifestations are not without society.

312

که برق جلوهٔ او بر جگر زد؟

که خورد آن باده و ساغر بسر زد

Who cast the lightning of His Grace on the heart? Who drank that wine and struck the cup on the head?

313

عیار حسن و خوبی از دل کیست؟

مه او در طواف منزل کیست؟

Whose heart is the criterion of beauty and good? Whose house is it round which His moon revolves?

314

«الست» از خلوت نازی که برخاست

«بلی» از پردهٔ سازی که برخاست

From whose privacy the cry of ‘Am I not your Lord’ arose? From whose musical strings the answer of ‘Yes’ appeared?

315

چه آتش عشق در خاکی بر افروخت

هزاران پرده یک آواز ما سوخت

What a fire Love kindled in this handful of dust; one cry from us burnt down thousands of veils.

316

اگر مائیم گردان جام ساقی است

به بزمش گرمی هنگامه باقی است

It is only our presence that keeps the cup of the Saki in motion and maintain liveliness in His society.

317

مرا دل سوخت بر تنهائی او

کنم سامان بزم آرائی او

My heart burns on the loneliness of God! In order, therefore, to maintain intact His Ego-Society.

318

مثال دانه می کارم خودی را

برای او نگهدارم خودی را

I sow in my dust the seed of selfhood, and keep a constant vigil over my ‘I’.

تو شمشیری ز کام خود برون آ

برون آ ، از نیام خود برون آ

You are a sword, come out of your cover, come out of your sheath.

نقاب از ممکنات خویش برگیر

مه و خورشید و انجم را به برگیر

Remove the veil from your potentialities; take hold of the moon, the sun and the stars.

321

شب خود روشن از نور یقین کن

ید بیضا برون از آستین کن

Illumine your night by the light of faith; take your white hand out of the armpit.

322

کسی کو دیده را بر دل گشود است

شراری کشت و پروینی درود است

He who has opened his eyes on the heart has sown a spark and reaped a fire.

323

شراری جسته ئی گیر از درونم

که من مانند رومی گرم خونم

Have a spark from my innermost heart, for my heart is as fiery as Rumi’s.

324

وگرنه آتش از تهذیب نوگیر

برون خود بیفروز ، اندرون میر

Otherwise get fire from the new Culture of the West, adorn your exterior and bring spiritual death on you.
