همچنان دیدم فن صورت گری
نی براهیمی درو نی آزری
I see the case of Painting (of slaves) quite similar; it is neither the work of Abraham (idol-smashing) nor of Adhar (idol-carving). (It neither breaks old traditions, nor introduces new one)
«راهبی در حلقهٔ دام هوس
دلبری با طایری اندر قفس
(Somewhere) a priest is shown trapped in the lust of baser passion; (at places) a beloved is shown (imprisoned) in a cage with a bird.
خسروی پیش فقیری خرقه پوش
مرد کوهستانیی هیزم بدوش
(Somewhere) a king is respectfully (sitting) in front of a beggar in rags; (at places) a highlander is shown carrying firewood on shoulders.
نازنینی در ره بتخانه ئی
جوگئی در خلوت ویرانه ئی
(Somewhere) beautiful young lady is going to a temple; (at places) a hermit is sitting alone in the solitude (desolation) of his cell.
پیرکی از درد پیری داغ داغ
آنکه اندر دست او گل شد چراغ
(Somewhere) an old man suffering from burden of old age carrying an extinguished candle (of life) in his hand.
مطربی از نغمهٔ بیگانه مست
بلبلی نالید و تار او گسست
A musician absorbed in listening alien song; like nightingale wailing (for mercy) like a musical instrument with broken strings.
نوجوانی از نگاهی خورده تیر
کودکی بر گردن بابای پیر»
A youth hurt by arrows (hurled from the bow of beautiful) eyes of the beloved; (like a) child (riding) on the neck of a grandfather.
می چکد از خامه ها مضمون موت
هر کجا افسانه و افسون موت
Their brushes paint nothing but death scenes; every painting tells a story of death.
علم حاضر پیش آفل در سجود
شک بیفزود و یقین از دل ربود
Modern knowledge prostrates in front of the fleeting (passing); it increases apprehensions (doubts) and diminishes trust (in God) (pointing towards the episode of Prophet Ibrahim, AS)
بی یقین را لذت تحقیق نیست
بی یقین را قوت تخلیق نیست
Quest for (truth) does not sprout in individuals without faih; those without faith cannot be creative.
بی یقین را رعشه ها اندر دل است
نقش نو آوردن او را مشکل است
Heart of those without faith trembles perpetually; it is difficult for him to come out with new (novel) ideas.
از خودی دور است و رنجور است و بس
رهبر او ذوق جمهور است و بس
He is far away from self-awareness and remains sick at heart; he is conscious of masses’ likes and dislikes (he is a follower, not a leader).
حسن را دریوزه از فطرت کند
رهزن و راه تهی دستی زند
He begs beauty from the external nature (instead of creating it himself); he is a robber who robs the poor.
حسن را از خود برون جستن خطاست
آنچه می بایست پیش ما کجاست
Seeking beauty from outside oneself is a mistake; what ought to be is not outside (oneself).
نقشگر خود را چو با فطرت سپرد
نقش او افکند و نقش خود سترد
When a painter surrenders oneself to Nature; then he only copies (duplicates), he cannot create new things.
یک زمان از خویشتن رنگی نزد
بر زجاج ما گهی سنگی نزد
He could not manifest his own self (in his works); he did not strike the glass of heart with a stone (he cannot move or touch the hearts of those who see his pictures).
فطرت اندر طیلسان هفت رنگ
مانده بر قرطاس او با پای لنگ
Nature wrapped in multicoloured robe remains limping (incomplete) in his works.
بی تپش پروانهٔ کم سوز او
عکس فردا نیست در امروز او
His moth lacks (inner) warmth; his today (present) has no reflection (glimpse) of tomorrow (future).
از نگاهش رخنه در افلاک نیست
زانکه اندر سینه دل بیباک نیست
His sight (vision) cannot penetrate skies; because heart in his chest is not daring.
خاکسار و بی حضور و شرمگین
بی نصیب از صحبت روح الامین
He is earth-rooted, shy and without experience of ecstasy (suffers from inferiority complex and perversion); because he is deprived of company of Rooh-ul-Ameen (contact with the world of spirit).
فکر او نادار و بی ذوق ستیز
بانگ اسرافیل او بی رستخیز
His thinking is hollow (lacks depth) and has no desire for struggle; his voice cannot bring about any resurrection.
خویش را آدم اگر خاکی شمرد
نور یزدان در ضمیر او بمرد
If a human being deems himself earthly; the Divine light (spirit) in him dies.
چون کلیمی شد برون از خویشتن
دست او تاریک و چوب او رسن
When (such a) Moses comes out; his bright hand turns dark and his staff (stick) turns into a (thin) rope.
زندگی بی قوت اعجاز نیست
هر کسی دانندهٔ این راز نیست
Life without the capacity for new creations, but everyone does not know this secret.
آن هنرمندیکه بر فطرت فزود
راز خود را بر نگاه ما گشود
Artist that adds to (the beauty of) Nature; he reveals his inner secrets of his vision before us.
گرچه بحر او ندارد احتیاج
میرسد از جوی ما او را خراج
Although his boundless ocean does not need anything; yet our rivulets contribute to it.
چین رباید از بساط روزگار
هر نگاه از دست او گیرد عیار
(Such artist) removes wrinkles (transforms) the old values; his works are (ideals for) true standard of beauty.
حور او از حور جنت خوشتر است
منکر لات و مناتش کافر است
His houri is more charming than the houri of paradise; one who does not recognize his Lat and Manat (idols which were kept in Haram have been used as reference) is a non-believer.
آفریند کائنات دیگری
قلب را بخشد حیات دیگری
He creates new universe; he gives new life to the heart.
بحر و موج خویش را بر خود زند
پیش ما موجش گهر می افکند
He is (like) an ocean that is in encounter with his own waves; then waves throw pearls (on shores) in front of us.
زان فراوانی که اندر جان اوست
هر تهی را پر نمودن شأن اوست
It is because of the bountifulness of its nature that it fills every emptiness (nourishes the impoverished).
فطرت پاکش عیار خوب و زشت
صنعتش آئینه دار خوب و زشت
His pious nature is measure for right and wrong; his works elaborate difference between beautiful and ugly.
عین ابراهیم و عین آزر است
دست او هم بت شکن هم بتگر است
He is like Abraham as well as Adhar; he is idol-breaker and idol-maker at the same time (he breaks old trends and sets new ones).
هر بنای کهنه را بر می کند
جمله موجودات را سوهان زند
He uproots every old foundation; resets his surroundings (and gives them new colours).
در غلامی تن ز جان گردد تهی
از تن بی جان چه امید بهی
In slavery the body is without soul; what good can be expected from soulless body?
ذوق ایجاد و نمود از دل رود
آدمی از خویشتن غافل رود
His heart is rendered with no creative desire; (such a person) becomes unaware of his self (existence).
جبرئیلی را اگر سازی غلام
بر فتد از گنبد آئینه فام
If you enslave Gabriel; even he would fall on earth from heights of heavens.
کیش او تقلید و کارش آزری ست
ندرت اندر مذهب او کافری ست
Slave is a follower and he is idol-carver; in his religion creativity is considered infidelity.
تازگیها وهم و شک افزایدش
کهنه و فرسوده خوش می آیدش
Novelties add to his suspicions and apprehensions; he remains happy with old and obsolete.
چشم او بر رفته از آینده کور
چون مجاور رزق او از خاک گور
He remains focused on the past and blind (oblivious) about future; he seeks livelihood from the dust of grave like a majawar (he follows old traditions).
گر هنر این است مرگ آرزوست
اندرونش زشت و بیرونش نکوست
If this is art, then it is death of hope (aspirations); essence of such art is dark (disgusting) but its appearance is beautiful.
طایر دانا نمیگردد اسیر
گرچه باشد دامی از تار حریر
Wise bird never gets trapped even if the net is made of silk (deceptively attractive); (wise people are not impressed by such art).
