در غلامی عشق و مذهب را فراق

انگبین زندگانی بد مذاق

In slavery ishq and religion are separated from each other; this spoils the taste of life’s honey. \[Ishq: True Love that demands total submission, unflinching devotion and unconditional obedience. Allama uses this word exclusively for the love for Allah and His Messenger (PBUH)\]

عاشقی ، توحید را بر دل زدن

وانگهی خود را بهر مشکل زدن

What is ishq? It means engraving belief of Tawhid (Allah’s Unity, oneness) on the heart; then face all adversaries steadfastly.

در غلامی عشق جز گفتار نیست

کار ما گفتار ما را یار نیست

In slavery ishq is mere lip-service; there is no cohesion in words and deeds.

کاروان شوق بی ذوق رحیل

بی یقین و بی سبیل و بی دلیل

The caravan lacks motivation for journey; it lacks faith, not sure of way forward and wanders without guide (leaderless).

دین و دانش را غلام ارزان دهد

تا بدن را زنده دارد جان دهد

Slave under-values both religion and wisdom; he gives away his soul to keep his body alive.

گرچه بر لبهای او نام خداست

قبلهٔ او طاعت فرمانرواست

He has word Allah on his lips; but he worships the might of his ruler.

7

طاقتی نامش دروغ با فروغ

از بطون او نزاید جز دروغ

His (ruler’s) power is persistent falsehood; nothing comes out of him except falsehood.

8

این صنم تا سجده اش کردی خداست

چون یکی اندر قیام آئی فناست

As long as you prostrate before this idol, this is god; once you rise upright before it, it crumbles.

9

آن خدا نانی دهد جانی دهد

این خدا جانی برد نانی دهد

Real God gives you bread and life; this (unreal god) gives you bread and (in return) takes life away.

10

آن خدا یکتا ست این صد پاره ایست

آن همه را چاره این بیچاره ایست

Real God is One, this (god) is divided into hundred pieces; He helps everyone and this is hapless.

11

آن خدا درمان آزار فراق

این خدا اندر کلام او نفاق

Real God is remedy for ailment of separation; this god’s word sows seeds of separation (disunity).

12

بنده را با خویشتن خوگر کند

چشم و گوش و هوش را کافر کند

This god makes the man intimate with himself and (the slave starts thinking according to this god’s wishes); slave loses the ability to use his own eyes, ears and mind.

13

چون بجان عبد خود راکب شود

جان به تن لیکن ز تن غایب شود

When this god captivates slave’s soul; then despite life in his body he becomes lifeless.

14

زنده و بیجان چه رازست این نگر

با تو گویم معنی رنگین نگر

Alive and yet lifeless, what is this? I’ll tell you its manifold interesting meanings.

15

مردن و هم زیستن ای نکته رس

این همه از اعتبارات است و بس

O wise man! Life and death are mere perceptions (relative events).

16

ماهیان را کوه و صحرا بی وجود

بهر مرغان قعر دریا بی وجود

For the fish mountains and deserts do not exist; for the birds the bed of a river does not exist.

17

مرد کر سوز نوا را مرده ئی

لذت صوت و صدا را مرده ئی

Deaf is dead in the context of a melody; because he is deprived of the sense of sound (hearing).

18

پیش چنگی مست و مسرور است کور

پیش رنگی زنده در گور است کور

Blind enjoys the ecstasy of the music; but in the world of colours he’s dead despite being alive.

19

روح با حق زنده و پاینده ایست

ورنه این را مرده آن را زنده ایست

Soul is alive as long as it has connection with Allah; when that link is severed man is alive as per one perception and the dead according to other.

20

آنکه حی لایموت آمد حق است

زیستن باحق حیات مطلق است

Only Allah lives forever, He never dies; so, connection with Allah guarantees eternal life.

21

هر که بی حق زیست جز مردار نیست

گرچه کس در ماتم او زار نیست

One who loses connection with Allah is dead; though no one mourns his death.

22

از نگاهش دیدنی ها در حجاب

قلب او بی ذوق و شوق انقلاب

To his eyes, the seeable things remain invisible; his heart is devoid of any earnest desire for revolution (change for better).

23

سوز مشتاقی به کردارش کجا

نور آفاقی به گفتارش کجا

His conduct lacks fire of devotion; his speech lacks heavenly light (spark of vision).

24

مذهب او تنگ چون آفاق او

از عشا تاریک تر اشراق او

His religion, like his vision, is narrow (blurred); his forenoon is darker than his night (expressed by referring to prayer timings).

25

زندگی بار گران بر دوش او

مرگ او پروردهٔ آغوش او

Life is a heavy burden on his shoulders; he nourishes his own death in his embrace.

26

عشق را از صحبتش آزار ها

از دمش افسرده گردد نار ها

In his company Ishq is afflicted with diseases; his breath extinguishes fire of Ishq.

27

نزد آن کرمی که از گل بر نخاست

مهر و ماه و گنبد گردان کجاست

Worm that lives under soil and never comes out; cannot understand what is moon, sun and the sky.

28

از غلامی ذوق دیداری مجوی

از غلامی جان بیداری مجوی

Do not search in slave the desire for audience with Allah; search not a living being in him.

29

دیدهٔ او محنت دیدن نبرد

در جهان خورد و گران خوابید و مرد

Slave’s eyes never strive to see the reality; in this world he only ate, slept deep and died.

30

حکمران بگشایدش بندی اگر

می نهد بر جان او بندی دگر

His master unties one knot; and then ties him in yet another.

31

سازد آئینی گره اندر گره

گویدش می پوش ازین آئین زره

Master drafts a charter for slave having numerous knots (impracticalities); then uses that charter to perpetrate more oppression.

32

ریز پیز قهر و کین بنمایدش

بیم مرگ ناگهان افزایدش

He shows the slave his brute power so that fear of sudden death in slave causes (shock and awe).

33

تا غلام از خویش گردد ناامید

آرزو از سینه گردد ناپدید

So that the slave suffers from despair and any desire to be something on his own is extinguished.

34

گاه او را خلعت زیبا دهد

هم زمام کار در دستش نهد

Sometimes master grants the slave a silk robe (comfort with elegance); at times delegates a bit of power (use of carrot).

35

مهره را شاطر ز کف بیرون جهاند

بیذق خود را به فرزینی رساند

(Like) a cunning chessman (the master) moves his pieces in a way that he raises his pawn to the status of queen making (the slave) helpless.

36

نعمت امروز را شیداش کرد

تا به معنی منکر فرداش کرد

Master makes the slave addict of easy life; so the slave strives not for better future.

37

تن ستبر از مستی مهر ملوک

جان پاک از لاغری مانند دوک

Slave’s body grows (fattens) as master feeds him generously; but slaves soul weakens (becomes) thin like a spindle.

38

گردد ار زار و زبون یک جان پاک

به که گردد قریهٔ تن ها هلاک

Whereas, it is better that instead of weakening of soul, several abodes of men are destroyed.

39

بند بر پا نیست بر جان و دل است

مشکل اندر مشکل اندر مشکل است

The fetter is not on (slave’s) feet, it is on his heart and mind (on his courage and thinking); this is the difficulty, the real difficulty.
