Shaykh Mahmud Shabistari

Shaykh Mahmud Shabistari (1288–1320) was a noted Persian mystic, Sufi, and poet. He was born in Shabistar, near Tabriz in Azerbaijan. Though his life was brief, his writing earned him a lasting place among the leading figures of Persian Sufism.

Shabistari became well known in the scholarly and spiritual circles of his time. He wrote with subtlety and depth about Sufism, spiritual knowledge, and the unity of being. Mystical insight, spiritual truth, and the hidden life of the human soul are central to his poetry.

His best-known work is Gulshan-e Raz, one of the most important texts of Persian mystical literature and a subject of Sufi study and commentary for centuries. Other works associated with him include Kanz al-Haqaʾiq, Saʿadat-nameh, Mirʾat al-Muhaqqiqin, Maratib al-‘Arifin, and Haqq al-Yaqin.

Shabistari died in 1320 and was buried in his native town. His short life produced ideas and books that left a deep and lasting mark on Persian mystical thought.
