چون بجهد خنده ز من خنده نهان دارم از او

چون بجهد خنده ز من خنده نهان دارم از او
روی ترش سازم از او بانگ و فغان آرم از او

When laughter leaps forth from me, I keep laughter hidden from him; I make a sour face at him; I shout and scream at him.

با ترشان لاغ کنی خنده زنی جنگ شود
خنده نهان کردم من اشک همی‌بارم از او

If you joke and laugh at the sour ones, war arises; I have hidden my laughter, I drop tears at him.

شهر بزرگ است تنم غم طرفی من طرفی
یک طرفی آبم از او یک طرفی نارم از او

A huge city is my body, grief on one side, I on the other; one side I have water from him, on the other fire.

با ترشانش ترشم با شکرانش شکرم
روی من او پشت من او پشت طرب خارم از او

With his sours I am sour, with his sugars I am sugar; he is my face, he is my back, through him I scratch the back of joy.

صد چو تو و صد چو منش مست شده در چمنش
رقص کنان دست زنان بر سر هر طارم از او

A hundred the likes of me and you have become drunk in his meadow, dancing, hand-clapping on the summit of every dome through him.

طوطی قند و شکرم غیر شکر می نخورم
هر چه به عالم تُرُشی، دورم و بیزارم از او

I am the parrot of candy and sugar, I eat only sugar; whatever sour is in the world, I am far and indifferent to it.

گر ترشی داد تو را شهد و شکر داد مرا
سکسک و لنگی تو از او من خوش و رهوارم از او

If he has given you sourness, to me he has given honey and sugar; he has made you jolting and lame, me smooth and even of pace.

هر کی در این ره نرود دره و دوله‌ست رهش
من که در این شاه رهم بر ره هموارم از او

Whoever travels not on this road, his path is all gully and steep; I who am on this royal road am on a level path through him.

مسجد اقصاست دلم، جنّت مأواست دلم
حور شده، نور شده، جمله آثارم از او

My heart is the Masjid-i Aqs.¯a, my heart is the Paradise home; all my traces through him have become houris and light.

هر کی حقش خنده دهد از دهنش خنده جهد
تو اگر انکاری از او من همه اقرارم از او

To whomsoever God gives laughter, laughter leaps from his mouth; if you doubt Him, I am altogether in acknowledgement of Him.

قسمت گل خنده بود، گریه ندارد چه کند؟
سوسن و گل می‌شکفد در دل هشیارم از او

The rose’s portion is laughter, it has no weeping; what shall it do? Lilies and roses are blossoming in my conscious heart through Him.

صبر همی‌گفت که من مژده ده وصلم از او
شکر همی‌گفت که من صاحب انبارم از او

Patience was saying, “I bear good tidings of union from Him; gratitude was saying, “I am the owner of stocks through Him.”

عقل همی‌گفت که من زاهد و بیمارم از او
عشق همی‌گفت که من ساحر و طرارم از او

Reason was saying, “I am abstinent and sick through Him”; Love was saying “I am a magician and cutpurse through Him.”

روح همی‌گفت که من گنج گهر دارم از او
گنج همی‌گفت که من در بن دیوارم از او

Spirit was saying, “I am a pearl-possessing treasure through Him”; Treasure was saying, “I am at the foundation of the wall through Him.”

جهل همی‌گفت که من بی‌خبرم بیخود از او
علم همی‌گفت که من مهتر بازارم از او

Ignorance was saying, “I am without knowledge and consciousness through Him”; Knowledge was saying, “I am the chief of the bazaar through Him.”

زهد همی‌گفت که من واقف اسرارم از او
فقر همی‌گفت که من بی‌دل و دستارم از او

Abstinence was saying, “I understand the secrets through Him”; Poverty was saying, “I am without heart and turban through Him.”

از سوی تبریز اگر شمس حَقَم باز رسد
شرح شود کشف شود جملهٔ گفتارم از او

If Shams-i H. aqq returns to me from Tabriz, all my discourses will be expounded and revealed through Him.
