Naziri Nishapuri

Muhammad Husayn Naziri Nishapuri (1552–1612) was a distinguished Persian poet and an early architect of the Indian style. Born in Nishapur, he earned a prominent place in Persian literary history through his gifts, originality of thought, and distinctive voice. His poetry was admired in his own day and exercised a strong influence on later traditions.

After completing his education, Naziri devoted himself to poetry and moved to Kashan to refine his art. Kashan was then an important centre of Persian verse and a meeting place for poets of the school known as sabk-e vuqu‘. He took part in its literary gatherings and soon won recognition among his contemporaries.

Naziri later travelled to India, where he received an exceptional welcome at the Mughal court. He was first attached to the court of Emperor Jahangir and later enjoyed the patronage of the celebrated general and writer Abd al-Rahim Khan-e Khanan. His years in India brought him fame, honour, and prosperity, and his poetry reached its maturity there.

Naziri’s verse is marked by imaginative freshness, delicately worked themes, and subtle comparisons. These qualities influenced later poets in both Persian and Urdu and opened new intellectual and artistic possibilities within Persian poetry.

Naziri died in Agra in 1612. He is remembered as a poet of unmistakable style whose work continues to matter to readers of Persian literature.
