The fair one whom I am seeking with all my soul I do not see amongst those present here.

2

Where has he gone? He is not amongst those present; I do not see any sign of him in this assembly.

3

I am casting my gaze in every direction and every place; I do not see any trace of his rosebower.

4

Moslems, where has he gone, that illustrious one whom I used to behold in the midst like a candle?

5

Speak his name; for whoever has spoken his name, his bones will not crumble in the tomb.

6

Blessed is the man who has kissed his hand; at the time of death his mouth has become sweet.

7

Shall I give thanks for his countenance, or his character? For the world beholds none his like.

8

If earth does not find his form, what matters it, seeing that his heaven revolves in this love?

9

Speak the nicknames of Shams al-D¯ın-i Tabr¯ız; do not keep him concealed from the ears of the yearners.
