غزل شمارهٔ 38

English translation: Arberry

بجهان دردمندان تو بگو چه کار داری

تب و تاب ما شناسی دل بی قرار داری

Tell me this: what is Thy share in this world of pain and care? Knowest Thou the spirit’s smart? Hast Thou an uneaseful heart?

چه خبر ترا ز اشکی که فرو چکد ز چشمی

تو ببرگ گل ز شبنم در شاهوار داری

Of such bitter tears that well from the eye, what canst Thou tell? See, Thy rose’s petals hold dewy pearls of price untold!

چه بگویمت ز جانی که نفس نفس شمارد

دم مستعار داری غم روزگار داری

Or the soul, that numbereth life departing at each breath, borrowed spirit, grief of time – shall I speak thee in rhyme?
