این سخن آراستن بیحاصل است

بر نیاید آنچه در قعر دل است

The verbal discourse will achieve nothing; all that is in the depth of heart cannot be described.

2

گرچه من صد نکته گفتم بی حجاب

نکته ئی دارم که ناید در کتاب

Although I have described openly hundreds of secrets; yet I am left with a (secret) point which cannot be penned down.

3

گر بگویم می شود پیچیده تر

حرف و صوت او را کند پوشیده تر

If I describe, it becomes more complicated; verbal expressions result in concealing it further.

4

سوز او را از نگاه من بگیر

یا ز آه صبحگاه من بگیر

This point derives warmth (wisdom) from my vision and my pre-dawn prayers.

5

مادرت درس نخستین با تو داد

غنچهٔ تو از نسیم او گشاد

Your mother taught you the first lesson (la ilah); your flower blossomed because of (her acting like) morning breeze.

6

از نسیم او ترا این رنگ و بوست

ای متاع ما بهای تو ازوست

Your colour and fragrance is because of that breeze; you are our asset, but your value is because of her (efforts).

دولت جاوید ازو اندوختی

از لب او لااله آموختی

You acquired everlasting worthiness from her as you leant la ilah from her.

8

ای پسر ذوق نگه از من بگیر

سوختن در لااله از من بگیر

O my son! Now get the vision from me; learn from me to smoulder in the fire of la ilah.

9

لااله گوئی بگو از روی جان

تا ز اندام تو آید بوی جان

If you say la ilah, speak it from the depth of your heart so that your body may smell of soul.

مهر و مه گردد ز سوز لااله

دیده ام این سوز را در کوه و که

Moon and Sun revolve because of the force of la ilah; I have seen its force pulsating in mountains and straws.

این دو حرف لااله گفتار نیست

لااله جز تیغ بی زنهار نیست

These two words ‘la ilah’ aren’t just verbal expression, but a sword out of its (scabbard) cover.

12

زیستن با سوز او قهاری است

لااله ضرب است و ضرب کاری است

Living with it is qa’hari (ability to punish with impunity); la ilah is not just a blow, but a fatal blow.

مؤمن و پیش کسان بستن نطاق

مؤمن و غداری و فقر و نفاق

True Muslim and a slave of others? Muslim and indulging in betrayal, disunity and hunger?

14

با پشیزی دین و ملت را فروخت

هم متاع خانه و هم خانه سوخت

Contemporary Muslim has sold his faith and Millat cheap; he has burnt his house and house-hold.

15

لااله اندر نمازش بود و نیست

نازها اندر نیازش بود و نیست

Once his prayer was nothing but la ilah, not now; once he was proud in humility (state of being humble), not now.

نور در صوم و صلوت او نماند

جلوه ئی در کائنات او نماند

Now his prayers and fasting lack the flare of faith; his world is devoid of the Divine light.

17

آنکه بود الله او را ساز و برگ

فتنهٔ او حب مال و ترس مرگ

He whose source of strength was only God has fallen prey to love of money and fear of death.

18

رفت ازو آن مستی و ذوق و سرور

دین او اندر کتاب و او بگور

He has lost that ecstasy, ardour and zest that once characterised him; his religion is in the Book and he is in the grave.

19

صحبتش با عصر حاضر در گرفت

حرف دین را از دو «پیغمبر» گرفت

He has adapted to contemporary times; he now learns religion from fake prophets.

20

آن ز ایران بود و این هندی نژاد

آن ز حج بیگانه و این از جهاد

One of them is Irani (Baha Ullah) and other Indian (Mirza Qadiani); first abrogated Haj and the other Jihad.

21

تا جهاد و حج نماند از واجبات

رفت جان از پیکر صوم و صلوت

When Haj and Jihad are out the spirit of fasting and prayer (namaz) also diminishes.

22

روح چون رفت از صلوت و از صیام

فرد ناهموار و ملت بی نظام

When the spirit of fasting and prayers is gone then individual is rendered unshackled and the nation (millat) is left without any systemic regulation.

23

سینه ها از گرمی قرآن تهی

از چنین مردان چه امید بهی

When hearts are deprived of warmth of Holy Qur’an what good can be expected from such people?

24

از خودی مرد مسلمان در گذشت

ای خضر دستی که آب از سر گذشت

Muslim has abandoned Khudi. O’Khyzer (A.S.) come to help the water has gone above heads.

25

سجده ئی کزوی زمین لرزیده است

بر مرادش مهر و مه گردیده است

That sajdah (that part of prostration in which the forehead touches the ground) which causes the earth to tremble; and the heavens start revolving according to his will.

26

سنگ اگر گیرد نشان آن سجود

در هوا آشفته گردد همچو دود

If the forehead (bearing mark of sajdah) touches a stone it would melt and evaporate into the air.

27

این زمان جز سر بزیری هیچ نیست

اندر و جز ضعف پیری هیچ نیست

That prostration these days is nothing but bending down of the head, and is nothing but old age's weakness.

28

آن شکوه ربی الاعلی کجاست

این گناه اوست یا تقصیر ماست

Where is elegance and grace of ‘Rabbi-al-ala’a’? Is it his sin or a decree against us?

29

هر کسی بر جادهٔ خود تند رو

ناقهٔ ما بی زمام و هرزه دو

Everybody is sprinting of his respective track; like a female camel without rein (unlike horses it is fixed by pricking the partition of the nose).

صاحب قرآن و بی ذوق طلب؟

العجب ثم العجب ثم العجب!

Qur’an is in the hand (in possession) but there is no urge (for doing noble things). Strange! Very strange! Very very strange!

31

گر خدا سازد ترا صاحب نظر

روزگاری را که می آید نگر

If God grants you insight, look at the times in which you live.

32

عقلها بیباک و دلها بی گداز

چشمها بی شرم و غرق اندر مجاز

Intellect of contemporary man is obstinate, his heart lacks tender feeling; his eyes are shameless and he is lost in superficial worldly beauty.

33

علم و فن دین و سیاست ، عقل و دل

زوج زوج اندر طواف آب و گل

Knowledge and art, religion and politics, mind and heart; everything is divided into groups and have become materialistic (material worshiper).

34

آسیا آن مرز و بوم آفتاب

غیر بین از خویشتن اندر حجاب

Asia, the land of rising Sun, is hidden from itself and busy watching others.

35

قلب او بی واردات نو بنو

حاصلش را کس نگیرد باد و جو

Its heart is empty of new ideas and ambitions; his thoughts and ideas are not worth penny.

36

روزگارش اندرین دیرینه دیر

ساکن و یخ بسته و بی ذوق سیر

In this old (ancient) world his life has become static, frozen and without desire for new things.

37

صید ملایان و نخچیر ملوک

آهوی اندیشه او لنگ و لوک

He has become prey to clerics and kings; the gazelle of his though is lame and limping (lacks sharp and conclusive thought).

38

عقل و دین و دانش و ناموس و ننگ

بسته فتراک لردان فرنگ

His intellect, faith, wisdom, self-respect and honour have been slung into the game-carrier of Frangis

39

تاختم بر عالم افکار او

بر دریدم پردهٔ اسرار او

I have invaded his domain of thought and have unveiled its secrets.

40

در میان سینه دل خون کرده ام

تا جهانش را دگرگون کرده ام

I have bled my heart to change his world.

41

من بطبع عصر خود گفتم دو حرف

کرده ام بحرین را اندر دو ظرف

I have said two things to contemporary thinkers; I have poured two oceans into these two pots.

42

حرف پیچاپیچ و حرف نیش دار

تا کنم عقل و دل مردان شکار

I have used both indirect and direct methods so that I prey heart and mind of contemporary people.

43

حرف ته داری باند از فرنگ

نالهٔ مستانه ئی از تار چنگ

Like the Western style I have used multi-layered words and I have also used strings of my musical instrument to produce melody (in the form of my poetry).

44

اصل این از ذکر و اصل آن ز فکر

ای تو بادا وارث این فکر و ذکر

The origin of one is contemplation, the origin of other is thought; may you be the inheritor of them both!

45

آب جویم از دو بحر اصل من است

فصل من فصل است و هم وصل من است

I am a stream, these two oceans are my source (origin); my flowing out from the source is separation as well as audience (unity).

46

تا مزاج عصر من دیگر فتاد

طبع من هنگامهٔ دیگر نهاد

Because my contemporary time has different kind of temperament; so I too have stirred a different kind of confrontation.

47

نوجوانان تشنه لب خالی ایاغ

شسته رو تاریک جان روشن دماغ

Our youth is thirsty but their glasses are empty; their faces are shining, intellect bright but their souls are in darkness.

48

کم نگاه و بی یقین و نا امید

چشم شان اندر جهان چیزی ندید

Short-sighted, lacking faith and in despair; their eyes can’t see anything in this world.

49

ناکسان منکر ز خود مؤمن به غیر

خشت بند از خاکشان معمار دیر

The ignorant deny their own greatness but believe in others and that is why (the idol worshiper) moulds bricks out of his clay to build a temple for himself.

50

مکتب از مقصود خویش آگاه نیست

تا بجذب اندرونش راه نیست

Their school does not know what it wants to achieve, because it is incapable of reaching the soul.

51

نور فطرت راز جانها پاک شست

یک گل رعنا ز شاخ او نرست

Teachers have deprived the youth of the light of the soul; that is why not a single ‘attractive flower’ has sprouted from their (schools) branches.

52

خشت را معمار ما کج می نهد

خوی بط با بچهٔ شاهین دهد

Our builders (teachers) lay wrongly the very first brick of foundation; they teach the ways of ducklings to chicks of falcon.

53

علم تا سوزی نگیرد از حیات

دل نگیرد لذتی از واردات

Unless knowledge does not acquire warmth from the state of being, heart cannot relish the act (of life).

54

علم جز شرح مقامات تو نیست

علم جز تفسیر آیات تو نیست

The aim of education is nothing but to explain the position of human beings in this world and its indicators.

55

سوختن میباید اندر نار حس

تا بدانی نقرهٔ خود را ز مس

Only after having been through the fire of awareness that human can distinguish between his silver and bronze.

56

علم حق اول حواس آخر حضور

آخر او می نگنجد در شعور

Knowledge of truth starts with sense-impressions and ends in vision; its end can't be comprehended by reason.

57

صد کتاب آموزی از اهل هنر

خوشتر آن درسی که گیری از نظر

You learn hundreds of books from learned teachers but the knowledge (awareness) acquired attention (of men having insight) is far better than bookish knowledge.

58

هر کسی زان می که ریزد از نظر

مست می گردد بانداز دگر

The vine that drips through eyes (attention) affects different people in different ways.

59

از دم باد سحر میرد چراغ

لاله زان باد سحر ، می در ایاغ

(Just as) morning breeze extinguishes a candle (lamp); but a bud of lalah turns into glass of wine (blossoms into fully-fledged flower.

60

کم خور و کم خواب و کم گفتار باش

گرد خود گردنده چون پرگار باش

Eat less, sleep less, speak less and like a compass keep revolving around one point (the inner self, the soul).

61

منکر حق نزد ملا کافر است

منکر خود نزد من کافر تر است

He who denies God is an unbeliever in the eyes of a theologian; to me, he who denies himself is a greater unbeliever.

62

آن به انکار وجود آمد «عجول،

این «عجول» و هم «ظلوم» و هم «جهول»

The one is called "hasty" because of denial of Being; the other is "hasty" as well as "unjust" and "ignorant".

63

شیوهٔ اخلاص را محکم بگیر

پاک شو از خوف سلطان و امیر

Be steadfast in the way of sincerity and free yourself from fear of kings and landlords.

64

عدل در قهر و رضا از کف مده

قصد در فقر و غنا از کف مده

In anger and happiness, do not falter in doing justice; do not stray away from ‘middle path’ in poverty and affluence.

65

حکم دشوار است تأویلی مجو

جز به قلب خویش قندیلی مجو

The Law may be difficult; don't seek escape from it; let none but your own heart be your guide.

66

حفظ جانها ذکر و فکر بی حساب

حفظ تنها ضبط نفس اندر شباب

Soul's welfare is limitless remembrance of God and rational reflection; body's welfare is self-control in youth.

67

حاکمی در عالم بالا و پست

جز به حفظ جان و تن ناید بدست

Higher positions of honour in this world and hereafter can only be achieved through protection of soul and body.

68

لذت سیر است مقصود سفر

گر نگه بر آشیان داری مپر

To seek pleasure is the aim of traveling; if you cannot control the urge of looking back towards the nest, do not fly.

69

ماه گردد تا شود صاحب مقام

سیر آدم را مقام آمد حرام

The crescent revolves to become full moon; but man’s journey has no destination (he keeps rising higher and higher).

70

زندگی جز لذت پرواز نیست

آشیان با فطرت او ساز نیست

Life is nothing except enjoy the flying; nest (halt) is forbidden in man’s journey (in this world).

71

رزق زاغ و کرکس اندر خاک گور

رزق بازان در سواد ماه و هور

Livelihood of vultures and crows lies in the dead; eagles find it under the moon and sun (while flying in the sky).

72

سر دین صدق مقال اکل حلال

خلوت و جلوت تماشای جمال

The essence of religion is truthful speech and lawful food; to look at Beauty in solitude and in company.

73

در ره دین سخت چون الماس زی

دل بحق بر بند و بی وسواس زی

Live as hard as diamond in the path of religion; be in constant touch with God and live without anxiety.

74

سری از اسرار دین بر گویمت

داستانی از مظفر گویمت

I tell you of the essence of religion and relate to you an episode from the life of Sultan Muzaffar.

75

اندر اخلاص عمل فرد فرید

پادشاهی با مقام با یزید

He excelled in sincerity and righteousness of his deeds; he was a king but a (God’s man) like Bayazid Bistami (R.A.)

76

پیش او اسبی چو فرزندان عزیز

سخت کوش چون صاحب خود در ستیز

He had a horse that was dear to him like a son; that horse was strived hard like his owner.

77

سبزه رنگی از نجیبان عرب

باوفا ، بی عیب ، پاک اندر نسب

Pure Arabian horse of greenish colour; faithful, faultless and of pure breed.

78

مرد مؤمن را عزیز ای نکته رس

چیست جز قرآن و شمشیر و فرس

O man of intelligence! for a believer, there is nothing more dear than the Qur'an, a sword and a horse.

79

من چه گویم وصف آن خیر الجیاد

کوه و روی آبها رفتی چو باد

What can I tell you about qualities of that unique animal; it could pass over mountains and river like wind.

80

روز هیجا از نظر آماده تر

تند بادی طایف کوه و کمر

It would get alert the moment it sensed that a battlefield was around and cover the distance in no time.

81

در تک او فتنه های رستخیز

سنگ از ضرب سم او ریز ریز

It would strive and struggle hectically; its hoofs would crush stones into sand.

82

روزی آن حیوان چو انسان ارجمند

گشت از درد شکم زار و نژند

One day that horse respected like humans suffered from stomach pain and had gone weak.

83

کرد بیطاری علاجش از شراب

اسب شه را وارهاند از پیچ و تاب

Veterinarian treated him with wine and the horse recovered from pain.

84

شاه حق بین دیگر آن یکران نخواست

شرع تقوی از طریق ما جداست

But because of that the king never rode it; that is the way of taqwa, which is different from ours.

85

ای ترا بخشد خدا قلب و جگر

طاعت مرد مسلمانی نگر

May God grant you true heart, see the submission of a true Muslim!

86

دین سراپا سوختن اندر طلب

انتهایش عشق و آغازش ادب

Religion is to burn from head to foot in search; its end is love and its beginning is correct behaviour.

87

آبروی گل ز رنگ و بوی اوست

بی ادب ، بی رنگ و بو ، بی آبروست

Flower’s elegance (grace) is because of its colour and fragrance; disrespectful has no colour, no fragrance; so he is disgraceful.

88

نوجوانی را چو بینم بی ادب

روز من تاریک می گردد چو شب

When I see a disobedient youth; my day turns dark like a night.

89

تاب و تب در سینه افزاید مرا

یاد عهد مصطفی آید مرا

It increases pain in my heart and the testament of Mustafa comes to my mind.

90

از زمان خود پشیمان میشوم

در قرون رفته پنهان میشوم

I regret my contemporary era and I take refuge in the past.

91

ستر زن یا زوج یا خاک لحد

ستر مردان حفظ خویش از یار بد

Woman’s dress (protection of her body and honour) is her husband or her grave; for man it is to stay away from bad company.

92

حرف بد را بر لب آوردن خطاست

کافر و مؤمن همه خلق خداست

It is wrong to speak ill of others; believer and unbeliever, all are God's creatures.

93

آدمیت ، احترام آدمی

با خبر شو از مقام آدمی

Humanity means respect for other human beings; you must acknowledge the respectful position of a human being.

94

آدمی از ربط و ضبط تن به تن

بر طریق دوستی گامی بزن

To establish relations with each other and discipline that with that with tolerance; this is the right path, move on that.

95

بندهٔ عشق از خدا گیرد طریق

می شود بر کافر و مؤمن شفیق

Man of love tries to follow in the Ways of God, is kind to all, believer and unbeliever alike.

96

کفر و دین را گیر در پهنای دل

دل اگر بگریزد از دل وای دل

Let belief and unbelief find room in the expanse of your heart; if your heart feels ill at ease, then God protect you!

97

گرچه دل زندانی آب و گل است

اینهمه آفاق آفاق دل است

Though the heart is placed in the prison of the body, yet the entire heaven is its heaven.

98

گرچه باشی از خداوندان ده

فقر را از کف مده از کف مده

Even if you are a lord of the land, don't give up the attitude of faqr.

99

سوز او خوابیده در جان تو هست

این کهن می از نیاگان تو هست

The fire of fiqr is dormant in your soul; this old wine is from your ancestors.

100

در جهان جز درد دل سامان مخواه

نعمت از حق خواه و از سلطان مخواه

In this world seek nothing but pangs of the heart, ask blessings from God and not from kings.

101

ای بسا مرد حق اندیش و بصیر

می شود از کثرت نعمت ضریر

Even many of the righteous and wise people are blinded by the affluence (of wealth).

102

کثرت نعمت گداز از دل برد

ناز می آرد نیاز از دل برد

Affluence takes away tenderness from heart; it takes away humility and sows (seeds of) arrogance.

103

سالها اندر جهان گردیده ام

نم به چشم منعمان کم دیده ام

I have traveled in the world for years; I have seldom seen wet eyes of the rich.

104

من فدای آنکه درویشانه زیست

وای آنکو از خدا بیگانه زیست

I love him who lives like a dervish; woe to the man who lives forgetful of God!

105

در مسلمانان مجو آن ذوق و شوق

آن یقین آن رنگ و بو آن ذوق و شوق

There is no zeal and zest in contemporary Muslims; do not look for colour and fragrance of faith (he is devoid of it).

106

عالمان از علم قرآن بی نیاز

صوفیان درنده گرگ و مو دراز

Educated do not care about knowledge the knowledge of Qur’an; Mullahs are like ferocious wolves.

107

گرچه اندر خانقاهان های و هوست

کو جوانمردی که صهبا در کدوست

Although there is much activity in the monasteries, there is hardly a person who has wine in his cup.

108

هم مسلمانان افرنگی مآب

چشمهٔ کوثر بجویند از سراب

The Muslims impressed of the West search for Kausar (name of a spring in the heaven) in mirage.

109

بی خبر از سر دین اند این همه

اهل کین اند اهل کین اند این همه

All are ignorant of the essence of religion, they are men of deceit and malice.

110

خیر و خوبی بر خواص آمد حرام

دیده ام صدق و صفا را در عوام

I have not seen any good in the elite (rich), but common people (poor) are righteous and truthful.

111

اهل دین را باز دان از اهل کین

هم نشین حق بجو با او نشین

Distinguish people of religion from the people of malice; see the man of God and sit in his company.

112

کرکسان را رسم و آئین دیگر است

سطوت پرواز شاهین دیگرست

The ways and habits of vultures are different and flight of eagles is impressively elegant.

113

مرد حق از آسمان افتد چو برق

هیزم او شهر و دشت غرب و شرق

Man of God strikes like lightening and sets ablaze cities and deserts of east and west like firewood.

ما هنوز اندر ظلام کائنات

او شریک اهتمام کائنات

We are still lying in the dark spot of the world, but he is busy administrating the world.

115

او کلیم و او مسیح و او خلیل

او محمد او کتاب او جبرئیل

He is like Kalim, Messiah, Khalil; he is Muhammad, the Book and Gabriel.

116

آفتاب کائنات اهل دل

از شعاع او حیات اهل دل

He is a sun for the people with hearts; their lives are because of his rays (prophets are the best example of men of God).

117

اول اندر نار خود سوزد ترا

باز سلطانی بیاموزد ترا

Man of God first burns you in his own furnace; he then teaches you the royal ways.

ما همه با سوز او صاحبدلیم

ورنه نقش باطل آب و گلیم

It is his fire that grants us a heart; otherwise we are just fake beings moulded out of soil and moisture.

119

ترسم این عصری که تو زادی درآن

در بدن غرق است و کم داند ز جان

I am scared of the era in which you have born; this era is has drowned (lost) in the body and unaware of soul.

120

چون بدن از قحط جان ارزان شود

مرد حق در خویشتن پنهان شود

When body loses its value due to drought in his soul; then men of God is concealed within him (body).

121

در نیابد جستجو آن مرد را

گرچه بیند روبرو آن مرد را

No quest can find (rediscover) that man of God; though he is always present right in front of you.

122

تو مگر ذوق طلب از کف مده

گرچه در کار تو افتد صد گره

Yet you must keep your quest going even if you face numerous hardships in doing that.

123

گر نیابی صحبت مرد خبیر

از اب وجد آنچه من دارم بگیر

If you do not find the company of an aware man then whatever I have inherited from ancestors, you get it from me.

124

پیر رومی را رفیق راه ساز

تا خدا بخشد ترا سوز و گداز

Make Rumi your guide on the path, that God may grant you ardour and compassion.

125

زانکه رومی مغز را داند ز پوست

پای او محکم فتد در کوی دوست

As Rumi could differentiate between husk and the grain so he enters the street of the Friend sure-footed.

126

شرح او کردند و او را کس ندید

معنی او چون غزال از ما رمید

People have explained his poetry, but have not understood him; meanings of his poetry remained elusive like gazelle.

127

رقص تن از حرف او آموختند

چشم را از رقص جان بر دوختند

Bodies of people have whirled reciting his poetry, but their souls remained blind unable to whirl).

رقص تن در گردش آرد خاک را

رقص جان برهم زند افلاک را

Body’s dance only raises the dust; but soul’s dance causes upheaval in the heavens (initiates change, revolution).sets the

علم و حکم از رقص جان آید بدست

هم زمین هم آسمان آید بدست

Soul’s dance not only gets you knowledge and understanding, but also gets you this world and heavens.

130

فرد ازوی صاحب جذب کلیم

ملت ازوی وارث ملک عظیم

Individual acquires from this acquires the ability like Moses A.S. (of talking to his Creator); the nation (millat) acquires a great country (empire).

رقص جان آموختن کاری بود

غیر حق را سوختن کاری بود

It is not easy to learn the dance of the soul; one learns it only by torching all the fake gods.

132

تا ز نار حرص و غم سوزد جگر

جان برقص اندر نیاید ای پسر

O my son! You can never learn the dance of the soul until you rid yourself from greedily looking towards fake gods and then feel sorry on getting nothing.

133

ضعف ایمانست و دلگیریست غم

نوجوانا «نیمه پیری است غم»

Sorrow and despair are symptoms of weak Ayiman (faith). O my son! Sorrow and despair is half of old-age.

134

می شناسی حرص «فقر حاضر» است

من غلام آنکه بر خود قاهر است

Do you understand that greed is perpetual destitution; I am at the service of the man who has control over himself (controls his desires).

135

ای مرا تسکین جان ناشکیب

تو اگر از رقص جان گیری نصیب

O my son! You are source ofsatisfaction for my restless heart; if you learn dance of the soul;

136

سر دین مصطفی گویم ترا

هم به قبر اندر دعا گویم ترا

I tell you the essence of Mustafa's religion, and shall pray for you in the grave too!
