1723 — 1810CE

Mir Taqi Mir, respectfully known as Khuda-e Sukhan, is one of the foundational and greatest masters of Urdu poetry. Born in Agra, he came to Delhi in youth and later moved to Lucknow after repeated wars and the devastation of the Mughal capital. Personal losses and the ruin of Delhi left deep and lasting impressions on his imagination.

Mir composed six Urdu divans and wrote ghazals, masnavis, qasidas, rubais and other forms. His important prose works include Zikr-e Mir and Nikat al-Shuara. His greatest achievement is the ghazal, where colloquial spontaneity, precise language, musicality and deep emotional insight turn personal grief into a universal human experience.

Later generations of poets, including Ghalib, acknowledged Mir’s mastery. His language appears remarkably simple, yet its cadence, layers of meaning and emotional quality are difficult to imitate. Mir’s poetry remains a fundamental measure of Urdu’s expressive range and the inward power of the classical ghazal.
