Poet
Mir Babar Ali Anis
Mir Babar Ali Anis is counted among the greatest classical masters of the Urdu marsiya. Born in Faizabad into a distinguished family of poets, he inherited a rich literary tradition from his father Mir Khaliq and grandfather Mir Hasan. He later settled in Lucknow, where the culture of mourning assemblies and marsiya recitation brought his art to its height.
Anis made the marsiya a vast dramatic form. His long poems on Karbala combine flowing narrative, characterisation, dialogue, battle scenes, moral thought and profound grief. His command of language and imagery allowed him to portray both domestic tenderness and battlefield courage with equal power, while his recitations gave the written text a full communal life.
He also wrote salams, rubais and some ghazals, but his greatest achievement was to establish elegiac poetry among the highest artistic forms of Urdu literature. His linguistic range, vivid scene-making and humane portrayal of courage and sorrow continue to influence the marsiya tradition.
