Poet
Khwaja Altaf Hussain Hali
Khwaja Altaf Hussain Hali was a poet, critic, biographer, and reformist thinker who helped shape modern Urdu literature. Born in Panipat, he studied in Delhi and benefited from the company of Ghalib and Nawab Mustafa Khan Shefta. Work at the Punjab Government Book Depot later brought him into sustained contact with new literary and intellectual currents.
Hali began within the classical ghazal tradition but gradually argued for greater simplicity, moral seriousness, social relevance, and truthful observation in poetry. His Musaddas-e-Hali became a landmark of reformist verse, while Muqaddama-e-Sher-o-Shairi laid foundations for modern Urdu literary criticism. He also wrote influential biographies of Ghalib, Saadi, and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.
His writing joins literary craft to a concern for education, ethical renewal, and social change. Although later critics have debated aspects of his programme, Hali’s role in redirecting Urdu poetry and prose toward the questions of modern life remains fundamental.
