شهر کابل خطهٔ جنت نظیر
1

شهر کابل خطهٔ جنت نظیر

آب حیوان از رگ تاکش بگیر

The city of Kabul, its clime resembling paradise; You get the Water of Life from the vein of its grapes,

2

چشم صائب از سوادش سرمه چین

روشن و پاینده باد آن سر زمین

the eye of poet acquires collyrium from its precincts.

3

در ظلام شب سمن زارش نگر

بر بساط سبزه می غلطد سحر

Observe its jesamine beds in the darkness of night: you would say as if the dawn lolls on the carpet of its grass.

4

آن دیار خوش سواد ، آن پاک بوم

باد او خوشتر ز باد شام و روم

That city with the lovely climes in that hallowed land, its breeze is better far than that of Syria and Rum.

5

آب او براق و خاکش تابناک

زنده از موج نسیمش ، مرده خاک

Its water so glittering and earth radiant, the dead earth springs into life with its pleasant draughts.

6

ناید اندر حرف و صوت اسرار او

آفتابان خفته در کهسار او

Its excellence cannot fall into the grasp of words’ expressions, suns upon suns lapped in sleep in its mountains;

ساکنانش سیر چشم و خوش گهر

مثل تیغ از جوهر خود بی خبر

its inhabitants complacent and genial, unware of their mettle like a sword.

قصر سلطانی که نامش دلگشاست

زائران را گرد راهش کیمیاست

The royal palace named Dilkusha (Heart Ease), the dust on its way is like alchemy for those who come to it.

9

شاه را دیدم در آن کاخ بلند

پیش سلطانی فقیری دردمند

I met the king in his lofty palace —a poor fakir in the presence of a monarch.

10

خلق او اقلیم دلها را گشود

رسم و آئین ملوک آنجا نبود

His courteous nature opened wide the partals of hearts, nothing in the way of ways and formalities of kings.

11

من حضور آن شه والا گهر

بینوا مردی به دربار عمر

This humble one in the presence of that noble king was like an insignificant person in the court of ‘Umar the great caliph.

12

جانم از سوز کلامش در گداز

دست او بوسیدم از راه نیاز

My heart melt with the warmth of his hand, I kissed his hand out of humility.

13

پادشاهی خوش کلام و ساده پوش

سخت کوش و نرم خوی و گرم جوش

A king pleasant of speech and plainly clad, hard in striving, mild of nature and warm hearted.

14

صدق و اخلاص از نگاهش آشکار

دین و دولت از وجودش استوار

Sincerity and frankness apparent from his looks. Both Faith and realm firm in his person.

15

خاکی و از نوریان پاکیزه تر

از مقام فقر و شاهی باخبر

Of earth earthly but purer than angels luminous; cognizant of both modesty and kingship.

16

در نگاهش روزگار شرق و غرب

حکمت او راز دار شرق و غرب

In his sight the affairs of both East and West; his sagacity knowing their secrets alike.

17

شهر یاری چون حکیمان نکته دان

رازدان مد و جزر امتان

A king knowing subtle matters well like a sage knowing the causes of rise and fall of nations.

18

پرده ها از طلعت معنی گشود

نکته های ملک و دین را وانمود

19

گفت «از آن آتش که داری در بدن

من ترا دانم عزیز خویشتن

He said, “with the fire that you have in mind, I hold you as dear as my own son.

20

هر که او را از محبت رنگ و بوست

در نگاهم هاشم و محمود اوست»

Anyone who bears scent and hue of love is like Hashim and Mahmud in my eyes.”

21

در حضور آن مسلمان کریم

هدیه آوردم ز قرآن عظیم

I presented a copy of the glorious Quran to this noble Muslim as a gift.

22

گفتم «این سرمایهٔ اهل حق است

در ضمیر او حیات مطلق است

I said this is the whole and sole substance of men and God; it contains the very essence of life in all its absoluteness.

23

اندرو هر ابتدا را انتها است

حیدر از نیروی او خیبر گشاست»

Therein is the endpoint of all beginnings. By virtue of it, Hyder threw open the gate of Khyber.

24

نشهٔ حرفم بخون او دوید

دانه دانه اشک از چشمش چکید

The intensity of my words ran into his blood. and tears upon tears trickled from his eyes in serried train.

25

گفت «نادر در جهان بیچاره بود

از غم دین و وطن آواره بود

He said, “I, Nadir, was a helpless one, bewildered because of the sad plight of the Faith and homeland;

26

کوه و دشت از اضطرابم بیخبر

از غمان بی حسابم بی خبر

hills’ arid tracts were unaware of my perturbation, ignorant of my boundless sorrows.

27

ناله با بانگ هزار آمیختم

اشک با جوی بهار آمیختم

I raised cries with the note of the nightingale mixing my tears with the stream aflow in spring.

28

غیر قرآن غمگسار من نبود

قوتش هر باب را بر من گشود»

I had no solace except that of the Quran; its powers opened all doors to me.”

29

گفتگوی خسرو والا نژاد

باز با من جذبهٔ سرشار داد

The words of that king of high lineage caused again an upsurge in me.

30

وقت عصر آمد صدای الصلوت

آن که مؤمن را کند پاک از جهات

The call of noon prayer arose awhile which rids a believer of all limits.

31

انتهای عاشقان سوز و گداز

کردم اندر اقتدای او نماز

The climax of ardent love is nothing but intense feeling, so I performed the prayer in his lead.

32

رازهای آن قیام و آن سجود

جز به بزم محرمان نتوان گشود

The secret of that standing and prostrating cannot be told except to those who are close associates.
