Poet
Akbar Allahabadi
Syed Akbar Hussain Akbar Allahabadi was a great Urdu poet and a perceptive critic of Western civilisation and colonial modernity. Humour and wit became powerful instruments of cultural and intellectual criticism in his work. Born near Allahabad, he worked in the legal profession and eventually became a sessions judge. His long public career gave him a close view of colonial institutions, social display, new technologies and the cultural tensions of a rapidly changing North India.
Akbar used wit as a means of criticism rather than mere entertainment. In ghazals, qitas, rubais and nazms, he turned railways, education, offices, fashion, politics and everyday objects into a new symbolic language. His satire often turns towards the reader, exposing blind imitation, hypocrisy and the uneasy compromises between tradition and colonial modernity.
His poetry brings together the refinement of classical language and the simplicity and ease of everyday speech, making his social observation unusually vivid. Verbal wit, moral insight and historical awareness give his satirical poetry its distinctive character.
